That is the contention of two Michigan State University economics professors who recently completed a book about writing term papers, those end-of-semester bears that almost always mean an agonizing all-nighter. "THIS IS VERY much a beginner's book - for a student with little ex- perience writing term papers," ex- plained MSU economist Lawrence Of- ficer, who, along with fellow economist Daniel Saks and Lansing State College publications coordinator Judith Saks, has written So You Have to Write an Economics Term Paper. The pocket-size volume contains twelve chapters including tips on researching and handling information, and seven economics papers that previously appeared in the MSU Economist. "Only the second half of the book is specific to economics. The first half is basically a guide to using the library, a 'how-to' type of approach. Although it may be best for economics students, we feel its general information can be used by all beginners," Officer said. ALTHOUGH THERE are numerous other books about writing term papers already available, Officer said, "most other books of this type refer to the graduate level and these tend to be very dry - they are written as reference books rather than as 'how-to' books." Officer found that many students, having had little experience writing term-papers, resort to plagiarism and last-minute writing.
