Michigan Employment Security Com-
mission indicate that March unem-
ployment for Ann Arbor stood at 7.1 per
cent, up 1.6 per cent from the same
period last year. A spokesman for the
service said he believes the massive
auto company layoffs are responsible
for displacing jobs for college studenta.
Ardis said "it's a little too early to
tell" just how hard the Ann Arbor job
market has been hit. "It will be depen-
dent on whether the government ex-
pands jobs to offset the lack of jobs in
factories,"he said.
"Most companies create summer
jobs. Some of them feel it's a big
responsibility to hire young people,"

Ardis said. However, he said he feels
fewer companies will be doing summer
hiring because "the economy has
lessened national job mobility" and
"employers are using people who have
been laid off within the company to fill Do a Tree
positions."
Dave Brooks, manager at Dino's Piz-
za in nearby Canton township, was in O rO vor
Ann Arbor last week talking to Second
Chance manager Rogers. The tight job
market is "definitely all over
Michigan,'' Brooks said.
"Don't you find you can be really Your Da iy
picky about the people you hire?"
Brooks asked Rogers.
"Your crew realizes, 'Hey, if I can't
do the job, there's a million other
people who want it,"' Rogers said.
