Knight, who went through a period of refusing to talk to reporters after games, has written a guest column that will appear Sunday in the Des Moines Register. THE COLUMN is about a long-time coaching rival, Johnny Orr, who left af- ter 12 seasons at the University of Michigan to become basketball coach at Iowa State. Knight initiated the offer to write the column, a move that surprised the Register sports staff. Writer Ron Maly, who made the arrangements, said the offer "came out of the clear blue sky." "I was in Iowa City and got a call from my office saying Bobby Knight he told the Register, "We coached had called me," Maly said. "I returned against each other for so many years the call and he said he had this idea he that I don't want him to leave the Big wanted to run by me. Ten without saying a few things." In addition to meeting twicl a year "HE SAID HE'D like to write during the regular season, Orr and something about Johnny Orr. Competing is more important than winning, said the late Baron Pierre de Couhertin, founder of the modern Games. oBut-these athletes and hundreds more will do neither. This past week, France and Portugal decided to attend the Games, but the Time running out on baseball talks NEW YORK (AP)-With time run- ning out on a strike deadline, negotiators in the major league baseball contract dispute are moving further apart instead of closer to an agreement. That's the view of federal mediator Kenneth Moffett after the talks turned decidedly gloomy yesterday. "THERE WAS no agreement on anything," said Moffett. "It seemed there was a good deal of animosity between the parties on the No. 1 issue, compensation. We're running out of time and I'm concerned. Given the present mood of the parties and the pace of the negotiations, we're liable to find ourselves running out of time." The players have set a strike deadline of midnight, May 22, vowing to stop playing if a contract is not reached by that time. According to Marvin Miller, executive director of their union, nothing was accomplished Friday other than using up another day's time en route to the deadline. "I am very pessimistic," said Miller. "We wasted another day. Each ad- ditional waste of time.. . well, they're just playing games with us." "THEY HAVE BEEN trying anything possible to con the players in- to continuing to work under a 1976 agreement while they collect 1980 prices," Miller added. "That's a great proposal, isn't it?" Talks continue today with another negotiating meeting also scheduled for Sunday. BILLBOARD The Michigan men's track team will compete in the Ann Arbor Relays today, giving the thinclads their last chance to compete before the Big Ten championships on May 23-24.
