Page 16-Friday, May 16, 1980--The Michigan Daily Players break stalemate 4 Offer to isolate compensation issue in negotiations NEW YORK (AP)-Movement, ab- sent for so long in the baseball negotiations, continued to surface yesterday with a proposal offered by the players association which would isolate the troublesome compensation question from the rest of the issues. Marvin Miller, executive director of the union, said his group would with- draw all of its demands in the area of free agency and the reserve clause, if agreement could be reached on the other contract matters. Those would include among other items, player pen- sions, health and safety questions, and minimum salaries. "Since we are reasonably close on issues outside of compensation and free agency, we have offered to withdraw all our proposals in these areas uncon- ditionally," said Miller. If the owners accpet that proposal, a joint study committee would be established to examine the ram- fications of the current free agent system for the next two years. At the end of that period, if it is unhappy with conditions, management would have the right to demand that the contract be reopened to deal with the issue. Management negotiators asked for time to. study the proposal and talks were recessed until later in the day when the owners' representatives were to reply. Ray Greybey, chief negotiator for the clubs, declined immediate comment on the players' proposal. Flyers roar back Philadelphia's Bobby Clarke flips the puck between the legs of New York Islander goalie Billy Smith, as the Flyers score the first goal in last-night's 8-3 win over the Islanders. The Flyers thus tied their Stanley Cup final series at one game apiece. 4 SPORTS OF THE DAILY The compensation question has been a cornerstone on management's demands since these contact talks began last winter. The clubshavetsaid throughout they would insist on some form of it being written into a new agreement so that teams losing premium free agent players, would receive replacements. The players association has been just as adamant in its refusal to accept any form of compensation and the talks have been deadlocked for sometime on that issue. F Major League Standings Jab bar to LOS ANGELES (AP)-Los Angeles Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, suffering from a sprained ankle, will not make the trip to Philadelphia for tonight's National Basketball Association championship game again- st the 76ers, the Lakers said Thursday. Dr. Robert Kerlan said: "It is extremely doubtful that Kareem would be able to play. By keeping him in Los Angeles and treating him here, he will be much better prepared to play on Sunday if that game is necessary." Kerlan added that the prognosis for the 7-2 center playing on Sunday in Los Angeles-if a seventh and final game is necessary-would be only 50-50. Abdul-Jabbar injured the left ankle in the Lakers' 108-103 victory over the 76ers Wednesday night that gave Los Angeles a 3-2 advantage in the best-of- seven NBA Championship series. He hurt the ankle late in the third quarter but came back to score 14 of his 40 poin- ts in the final period, including the three-point play with 33 seconds to go that broke a 103-103 tie and resulted in the victory.
