HIS CONCERN WAS evident over the less than impressive performances by his reserve pitchers. "I'm concerned about our pitching. I have been since the beginning of the season." In spite of the non-essential nature of the games, the heavy-hitting Blue lineup cranked out 18 hits on the day, highlighted by a first inning, three-run home run by Jim Paciorek that broke Bill Freehan's single season Michigan runs batted in record. In the second game another Michigan record was shattered when George Foussianes passed Rick Leach in career RBI knocking in runs number 88 and 89. Michigan started the day off with a bang, pushing across nine runs in the first two innings. In the first inning, af- ter Paciorek's record-setting blast well over the wall in left center, Gerry Hool reached on an error by the Detroit thir- dbaseman, stole second, and came bome on Chuck Wagner's single to right. John Young followed with a run scoring double to stake the Wolverines toa 5-i lead. With Detroit's lead cut back to two runs, Middaugh brought back Wissing in the third and the righthander settled the Titans down for the middle three in- nings, allowing only one run on two hits. In the sixth, however, Michigan's four- th pitcher, Charlie Harvey gave up what proved to be the winning runs as the Wolverines went on to tally four in the bottom of the sixth. The split puts the Blue record at 31-15- 1 overall and sends the Wolverines into the final weekend of the regular season. TRAMMELL SINGLES IN WINNER Tigers By TIMOTHY YAGLE special tothe Daily DETROIT-Shortstop Alan Tram- mell drove in two runs with a ninth in- ning bases-loaded single to power the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 come-from- behind victory over the Oakland A's last night at Tiger Stadium. The dramatic win enabled Detroit to sweep its two-game series and extended its winning streak to six games. The bulk of the scoring took place in the early innings with the remaining runs coming in the ninth. The Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning off of A's starter Rick Langford when Trammell singled and Steve Kemp walked. Then third baseman Richie-Hebner tripled to straight-away center, driving in Trammell and Kemp to give the Tigers a quick 2-) lead. The A's then struck back with a run in the top of- the-second on-first baseman slippast Dave Revering's homer into the upper deck in right field. In the bottom of the third, Detroit took a 3-1 lead when Trammell hit an in- field single and Kemp singled to center, moving Trammell to third who then scored on Hebner's sacrifice fly to cen- ter. Oakland scored three runs to takea 4- 3 lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, Revering singled to right and third baseman Mike Gross walked. Both scored on Tony Armas' home run to left field. John Hiller relieved Tiger starter Milt Wilcox in the fifth and worked out of a jam of his own making to begin the inning. Rickey Henerson reached first on a fielding error by Hiller, and stole second. Mitchell Page walked on four pitches and Hiller balked, moving both runners up. Revering then walked to load the bases, but Gross grounded to Hiller to end the inning. The Tigers tied it at 44in the bottom of A's in ninth, 6-5 4 the fifth when Trammell walked and Kemp doubled down the left field line, scoring Trammell. Hebner's fly to cen- ter doused the threat. In the bottom of the eighth Trammell led off with a double to left, which singaled former Tiger manager Billy Martin to relieve Langford.Right- hander Bob Lacey came in and got Kemp on an infield pap out, Hebner struck out, and Champ Summers grounded out to end thempotential rallys The A's took the lead in their half of the ninth. Tiger ace reliever Aurelio Lopez took over for Hiller and Oakland pitcher Jim Essian promptly tagged him for a double off the left field fence. But the Tigers worked out of that by nailing pinch-runner Mike Edwards at third on a grounder after throwing Mario Guerrero out at first. But with two outs, the Tiger infield fell asleep when Rob Piccolo singled and Henderson doubled him home to give the A's a 54 lead. Tiger center fielder Kirk Gibson slipped after fielding the ball, allowing Piccolo to round third and head home. Gibson threw the ball to Trammell at second, not realizaing he had a chance for a play at the plate. The Tigers pulled it out in the ninth against Oakland reliever Dave Hamilton. Hamilton fanned Gibson and pinch-hitter Tom Brookens after walking Summers and Lance Parrish. Righthander Steve McCatty walked Lou Whitaker to load the bases to set up Trammell's heroics.
