The Michigan Daily-Thursday, May 15, 1980-Page 15 Carter asks for looser auto-credit policy WASHINGTON (UPI) - President Carter told top auto executives yester- day he has asked his economic advisers to come up with a plan to help both the slumping industry and its customers overcome current tight credit policies. Carter also said the United States will not abandon the small-car market to the Japanese, but he said he did not favor trade restrictions as a way to cut off the tide of small-car imports, accor- ding to participants. "All of us share a deep concern and common commitment to successfully address ... the problems of the auto industry in the United States," Carter said before the meeting began. "There are no easy, solutions, no magic an- swers to this question." Afterwards, Transportation Secretary Neil Goldschmidt said Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker is already calling member federal reserve banks to determine how banks are treating credit requests from both auto dealers and customers in- terested in buying new cars. He said Carter expected to have a plan from his advisers in about two weeks. Protection Agency chief Douglas Costle is reviewing regulations affecting the industry to determine whether any changes are possible without sacrificing safety or environmental concerns. Goldschmidt also said Carter told the automakers that he will make it clear to the Japanese that the U.S. will fight for the small-car market.
