Profess- in g love for writing

What inapired you to start
teaching?
Well, the honest answer is
to earn a living so that I can
spend the rest of my time writ-
ing. But I suppose there are
plenty of things that I could
have done to finance my writ-
ing habits, so I'm happy that
I'm doing something that I
love doing that I think is also
worthwhile ... I'm happy that I
get to work with young people
who are smart and interesting
and many of whom share the
same loves I do - reading and
writing - so that makes me
happy.
What sets you apart from
other professors?

I try to be a human being as
I'm being a professor. I think
more than some people, I'm
willing to reveal my own ques-
tions and frustrations and
the intersection between my
life and my work in ways that
maybe other professors aren't
comfortable with, or their sub-
ject doesn't really allow them
to do.
How would you define
success as a teacher?
I want people to develop
confidence in their own ques-
tions about the world. To think
of the world as an interesting
place, a mysterious place, an
exciting place, a frustrating
place and realize they have

a lot of questions about their
experience and what they are
reading ... It's not that you wait
for other people to tell you
what's important to have ques-
tions about.
How do you encourage
your students to think in
new ways?
In some ways it's very old.
Socrates was doing it, and
it's not that I'm Socrates, but
these are Socratic methods.
You teach the questions and
you try to connect to people, to
texts and to ways of thinking
about the world. So, I actually
think itos a very old method.
