The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com 4B - October 19, 2011 Jpor.dics' - THE QUICK BREAKDOWN M A IZ E G / JG E The Michigan Daily football writers break down the weekend's stats that don't show up in the box score. The Denard-o-Meter measures the success of quarterback Denard Robinson, the Beef-o-Meter judges how emotional (positive or negative) Brady Hoke was following the game, and the Hype-o-Meter measures the fans' performance. DENARD-O-METER r:.:.:f Vr (. i. .r - .I'. l .i} ,,.. .: ;. 0 1/4 Denards He had one touchdown run, but the rest wasn't good. The Spartans left him with less than 200 total yards. And that pick at the end of the game? It's prob- ably better if you don't think about it anymore. BEEF-0-METER What arethe things Hoke talks about? "Toughness," "physicality," "hearing football." Hoke admitted after the game that his team was beaten in every aspect. Brady Hokes He couldn't make a joke to redeem his perfomance. HYPE-0-METER 4/4 Big Houses The students packed their section hours before the game. Between the two fanbases, the place was rocking. There were some dull moments, but when the fans needed to show up they did. 0 IOOKING GOOD FEELING BLUE REDSHIRT JUNIOR ROY. ROUNDTREE: He started to come alive last week against Northwestern and then broke out against Michigan State. He had just 66 yards but led the team in receiving yards Saturday and scored his only touchdown in one of the game's biggest moments. Down by 14, Roundtree caught a pass on a slant route then broke the tackle and took it 34 yards for the score, bringing Michigan within a touchdown with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game. Had the Wolverines converted on 4th-and-1 from the nine-yard line on their next drive, (more on that in "Feeling Blue") Roundtree's play could have been seen as the game's turning point. Roundtree was getting open all day. His yardage total would be higher had Robinson had some better accuracy. Still after this week's performance and 83 yards against the Wildcats, Roundtree is returning to 2010 form. OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AL BORGES: When you have one of the best centers in the Big Ten (if not the country) and a quarterback who hasn't struggled to gain a yard in his lifetime, conventional wisdom says you run the ball on 4th-and-1 in a one-touchdown game with six minutes left. Borges called a play-action pass instead. Denard Robinson got rocked and Michigan lost their best chance of tying the game. Hoke can say his team didn't execute, but Borges is going to live with that misguided call for a long time. Even disregarding that call, Borges didn't adjust well to Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi's blitzes. Robinson was under pressure all day, and while it wasn't entirely Borges' fault - Robinson and the offensive line didn't perform well - the Wolverines had no answer to slow down the pass rush and give Robinson enough time to make the throw. NOTABLE QUOTABLE They need to feel this one. We all, need to feel this one for a while, but we'll turn the page. -Michigan coach Brady Hoke on the Wolverines' fourth-straight loss to rival Michigan State.
