"She brought up these names to me as I was studying with her," Brooks said. "They were always sort of with me, and I carried them with me into grad school at Yale University where I did more work on these figures and it eventually blossomed to a career inter- est." Brooks earned her Ph.D. from Yale University in 2002 and came to the University of Michigan that sanme year after receiving the Andrew W. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies. This semester, Brooks is teaching CAAS 201, an introduction to African American studies, ansd a seminar about race, gender and immigrationsin Amer- lean humor. Next semester, Brooks said, she's teaching a course on black popular culture. Brooks said she relishes the inter- disciplinary stature of ber work. She told a story about one of her students who came so her and told her bow the poetry they were reading in class empowered her and inspired a greater interest in poetry. "(My wsork is) culture and social history, it's sociology, it's literature," Brooks said.
