(AP) - Battle-weary troops and their families braced for a wrench- ing round of new deployments to Afghanistan, but many said they support the surge announced Tuesday as long as it helps to end the 8-year-old conflict. As President Barack Obama out- lined his plan to send 30,000 extra troops to Afghanistan - while * pledging to start bringing them home in 20tt - soldiers, Marines and their families interviewed by The Associated Press felt a tangle of fresh concerns and renewed hopes. Some took in the televised announcement as they played darts in a barroom near their base, while others watched from their living rooms. "All I ask that man to do, if he is going to send them over there, is not send them over in vain," said 57-year-old Bill Thomas of Jacksonville, N.C., who watched Obama's televised speech in his liv- MSA ELECTIONS From Page 1A This was a slight decrease from the 9.6 percent of the student vot- ing population that voted in MSA elections last fall. Both years were a major increase over the 5.3 percent of the student voting population that took part in the Fall 2007 election. Winter attributed the lower voter turnout to the timing of the elections right after the Thanks- giving break. She said she had planned on advertising the election with a link to the voting website on the desktop of 41l campus computers but the logos were not created in time for Information and Tech- nology Services to implement it. "It's something that ITS agreed to do and unfortunately we couldn't get a logo put togeth- ing room, where photos of his three sons in uniform hang over the TV. One of his sons, 23-year-old Cpl. Michael Thomas, is a Marine based at neighboring Camp Lejeune. He'll deploy next year to Afghanistan. An ex-Marine himself, Thomas said he supports Obama's surge strategy. But he shook his head when the president announced a 201t transition date no begin pull- ing out troops. "If I were the enemy, I would hang back until 2011," Thotnas said. "We have to make sure that we are going go stay until the job is done. It ain't going to be as easy as he thinks it is." Military officials say the Army brigades most likely to be sent as part of the surge will come from Fort Drum in New York and Fort Campbell in Kentucky. Marines, who will be the vanguard, will most likely come primarily from Camp Lejeune. er in time for it to get it set up," slie said. The election had been resched- uled for this week after the origi- nal dates - Nov. 18 and 19 - were deemed in violation of the MSA Compiled Code. MSA members acknowledged prior to the election the difficulty of holding an election immediate- ly following Thanksgiving break, since candidates weren't able to campaign as much immediately before the election. MSA President Abhishek Mah- anti said the voter turnout is good when the holiday is taken into consideration. "I'm happy with the way we did. I think the Thanksgiving holiday . is definitely hard to overcome in terms of people's schedules;" he said. "The fact that we had really good candi- dates for the-elections-helped voter turnout."
