Sanford C. Bledsoe Jr. Director of Marketing, Vault of Midnight What are the five best graphic novels for newcomers to the genre? "Good-bye Chunky Rice": Craig Thompson won acclaim and awards for his graphic novel "Blankets." His priorwork, "Good-bye, Chunky Rice" is an equally beautiful and masterfully illustrated graphic novel about leaving behind every- thing you know and love in search of personal growth and adventure. The story of two best friends who are forced apart by time and tide, "Good-bye, Chunky Rice," like all of Thompson's books, is a must read for anyone who has ever had to say goodbye to someone they love. "The Ultimates": Set in a non-canonical Marvel Comics universe, "The Ulti- mates" is a very adult and very dark re-imagining of the Marvel Universe. Mark Millar ("Wanted," "Superman: Red Son") puts a very modern, very political twist on your favorite Marvel characters. Fans of the "300" and "Iron Man" movies will eat this series up. Itthas been collected in two softcover trade paper- backs, featuring action-packed artwork by Bryan Hitch. "Kingdom Come": Alex Ross flipped the comic industry on its head with his fully-painted interior artwork for "Kingdom Come." This is as iconic as super- heroes get. Drawing heavily from religious imagery and the book of Revela- tions, this is the tale of the second coming of Superman, forced into retirement after Metropolis embraces a new breed of psychopathic superheroes. The war between old and new heroes erupts as the Justice League reforms in the wake of a disasterthat destroys much of the American Midwest. Twelve issues collected in a single, affordable softcover volume. "Umbrella Academy": Before becoming the front-man for the popular music group My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way had dreams of creating comic books. His dreams were realized in this Dark Horse Comics series. Influencedby some of the best 'BOs British comic writers (Alan Moore, Grant Morrison), Way has created an often absurd but deeply tragic family of science heroes (think "Royal Tenenbaums" meets "Hellboy"). Currently an ongoing series, the first story arc has been collected in a softcover graphic novel, with illustrations by extremely talented newcomer Gabriel Ba. "Criminal": For fans of "The Wire," "Sin City" and "The Sopranos." Current- ly an ongoing series, written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, "Criminal" is pulpy crime-noir at its finest. Each of the story arcs (roughly five issues each) features different characters - unwittingly bound together by their criminal activities and connections - but each volume creates a greater narrative of the seedy criminal underground that binds them. If you like heists, double-crosses and shoot-outs, you'll like "Criminal." Also be sure to check out their new series, "Incognito." 4 a TILT G EN I I Remember that old game you had in your basement with the wooden board and the metal ball and you had to tilt the board to navigate the ball past all those holes? Remember that time you thought you had finally beaten it but that god- damn second-to-last hole got you and you cried yourself to sleep? This is that, but on a computer. And less soul-crush- ing.
