2A - Wednesday, November 19, 2008 TOPPING IT OFF' Hitting the slopes? Grab a tray Some daring students still do it today, but "Traying" - the act of stealing a cafeteria tray to use as a sled - was a popular University pas- time in the winter in the 1970s. University alum Jim Weintraub said he used to steal trays from Mary Markley Residence Hall and use them to slide down hills in Nichols Arbore- tum. Around Thanksgiving in 1974, he broke his left thumb from crashing into a tree and had to geta cast. "I was a sophomore taking organic chemistry," Weintraub said. " For the final, I couldn't write with my left hand and had to do it with my right. I couldn't finish the exam in time." Weintraub said Sunday night was the most popular night for traying. Around 20 or 30 students could be found taking a study break to go tray- ing in the Arb at any given time. Weintraub said he hung up his tray after the accident. "After I busted my thumb, I was done," he said. Though sledding is permitted in designated areas of the Arboretum, traying was a hazard to the plants. April Pickrel, administration and visitor services coordinator for the Arboretum, said the biggest problem was when students sled after dark because they were more likely to run into trees and shrubs. "There were times when Arbore- tum staff came in the next morning and found broken trays beneath trees, and you just know someone had to go home hurt," Pickrel said. University Housing spokesman Peter Logan said traying was a big problem in the 1970s and 1980s when the dining halls didn't have staff to monitor the dining hall doors. "After a good snow, a lot of trays would disappear," Logan said. "Some of the managers would have to pull the trays from the racks so they would have enough for the next meal." While the scarcity of trays was an issue, the injuries students received from traying was a bigger problem. "Students gotpretty banged up and some got head injuries," Logan said. "We really tried hard to discourage students from taking trays because it really wasn't safe." Tommie Jones, assistant manager of the Hill Dining Center, who has worked in five of the University's din- ing halls in last six years, said he has never caught a student stealing a tray, but his co-workers have. The thieves never received a pun- ishment worse than a verbal warning, which Jones said wasn't bad consid- ering "they're stealing school prop- erty." Jones said he doesn't think traying will resurface as a student activity anytime soon. "I think students have long passed that kind of thing," he said.
