UC-Berkeley reports $1 billion loss

The Universityof California atBerke-
ley lost $1 billion in its last fiscal quar-
ter, the Daily Californian reported.
The loss won't affect the allotted
endowment money for the 2008-2009
fiscal year, which remains at $2.9
billion, but the overall endowment
dropped to $5.7 billion.
Spokesman Trey Davis attributed
the loss to the state of the economy,
and said the overall endowment has
grown since 1988.
"The market is experiencing some
of the biggest losses since the Depres-
sion Era," he said.
STUDENT CHARGED AFTER RIOT
A PennState University student has
been charged with a felony connected
to a riot that occurred after the foot-
ball game against Ohio State Univer-
sity, the Daily Collegian reported.
Kinesiology senior Robert Cook
is accused of disorderly conduct and
criminal mischief, and is set to face
trial after his defense attorney failed

to convince a judge in his prelimi-
nary hearing that he was wrongfully
charged.
Cook kicked over a lamp post with
a live wire, endangering himself and
others, the prosecution maintains.
Photographic evidence convinced the
judge that Cook is responsible for the
$3,500 of damage.
Another suspect, Will Forester of
Pittsburgh, will also face trial after
waiving his preliminary hearing. Two
more suspects scheduled their pre-
liminary hearings later this month.
PLUTO'S REPLACEMENT
Researchers at the University of
California at Berkeley photographed
what is believed to be a planet orbit-
ing a star in a solar system 25 light
years away, the Daily Californian
reported.
Paul Kalas, a professor of astrono-
my, used the Hubble Space Telescope
to take the image, marking the first
time anyone has directly imaged the

way a planet moves around a star.
"When you see this planet moving
along in orbit, it's almost as if it comes
alive," Kalas said. "It's extremely sat-
isfying, because in comparison to all
the other studies of exoplanets, no
one else had predicted the location of
a planet through theory."
DANCING AGAIN
The University of Illinois's Chief
Illiniwek danced again on Saturday,
for the first time since 2007, the Chi-
cago Tribune reported.
University administrators banned
the mascot from sporting events
because they said it was insensitive to
the Native American culture. But Stu-
dents for Chief Illiniwek have been
diligent in bringing him back, hosting
try-outs and raising $4,500 to rent
out a hall on campus.
The group also paid for a new out-
fit, as the old one had been confiscated
by the University.
