Professor refuses harassment training

A professor at the University of
California at Irvine is refusing to
participate in required sexual harass-
ment prevention training, calling it
a "sham." Biology Prof. Alexander
McPherson is facing the possibility
of unpaid leave if he doesn't attend a
training course this week in compli-
ance with state law. His laboratory
supervision has already been sus-
pended, the Orange County Register
reported.
McPherson said he won't go to the
course.
"I have consistently refused to
take such training on the grounds
that the adoption of the requirement
was a naked political act by the state
that offended my sensibilities, vio-
lated my rights as a tenured profes-
sor, impugned my character and casta
shadow of suspicion on my reputation
and career," he said.
He did offer to compromise by ask-
ing the University to sign a disclaimer
saying he had never sexually harassed

anyone and that the training is "strict-
ly a pro forma condition for his contin-
ued employment," but the University
refused.
McPherson said he is prepared to be
forced into retirement.
ANTI-OBAMA AFTERMATH
Baylor University's student govern-
ment passed a bill denouncing recent
post-election activities on campus, the
Lariat reported.
David Garland, interim president
of the University, told the student
government that he was appalled and
embarrassed by some students' racist
post-election activities. In the days
since the election, there have been
reports of a noose hanging from a tree
and interracial fighting.
He said the University plans to
implement a bias-response team to
address future issues.
SNOW DAY? TRY PLAGUE DAY.
Hope College shut down its campus

after an outbreak of stomach flu among
students, the Kalamazoo Gazette
reported.
Up to 140 students reported symp-
toms last week, prompting college
administrators to close their doors
and forbid students from meeting
until Tuesday. Health officials said it's
the largestclosing due to disease in the
country. Students are dubbing the epi-
demic the "Plague of'08."
GROUP FOR THE TROOPS
A new organization at Texas Tech
is helping address concerns of student
veterans, the Daily Toreador reported.
The Veteran's Association met for the
first time last week to tackle problems
students face when transitioning from
a war zone to a classroom.
"Our main focus is to assist the
transition from the rigors of a mili-
tary lifestyle to becoming a successful
student," said senior Bryan Wilson,
founder of the group.
