MY ADVICE TO STUDENTS:
Learn as much as you can
now about the three types
of income: Earned, Passive,
and Portfolio.

OWARD MAPP spent
two years as an intern
at Liberty Mutual in
Philadelphia before graduation,
but left for Boston to work
full-time. He's enjoyed learning
about the insurance business
and his new surroundings-even
though he has to put up with
New England Patriots fans.

What surprised you most when
you started as a full-time
employee? At first, I thought working for an insurance
company would be boring, but it wasn't. Liberty's a very
young company and the people who work here really enjoy
themselves. Boston is a huge sports town, so being from
Philadelphia, we're always talking about sports and we even
play basketball regularly after work.
What are you most proud of in your work? I got to be a mentor
for a high school student who is an intern-Liberty has a
partnership with a local high school and teaches students
about business- and math-related careers. It's a great
accomplishment for me to be asked to participate in the
program and work with such talented and motivated students.

being micromanaged. You
never have people looking
over your shoulder or telling you what to do. You're expected
to ask questions when you're unclear about something. It's
one thing to know you can ask your neighbor or manager for
help, but it's another to know you have the option to work
through a problem yourself.
