Much to the ire of several students,
officials at the University of Missouri-
St. Louis ordered a poster hearing a
picture of Democratic presidential can-
didate Barack Obama to beremoved from
a school classroom, the St. Louis Post-
Dispatch reported.
The poster with Obama's picture
was removed after university officials
received a complaint that the poster was
a form of political advocacy. A UMSL
student said the poster with Obama's pic-
ture was part of a series of posters for an
introduction to teaching course that each
depicted pictures of good role models and
leaders.
UMSL officials said the courses
instructor could display the poster during
class hours but notbefore or afterward.
NCAA: TAKE THE BUS, ATHLETES
The NCAA recently announced that
it had revised its travel policies for the
fall collegiate athletics season in light
of increasing fuel prices and the limited
availability of airline flights, The Chron-

icle of Higher Education reported.
Under the new rules, the NCAA,
which pays the travel costs of national-
championship tournaments, mandates
that Division t teams must drive to a
competition if they are 400 miles away
or closer; the previous limit was 350
miles for travelingcteams.
In addition, the national organiza-
tion has told teams they need to drive
even further to find cheaper airline
fares, extending the airport travel cut-
off from 120 miles to 150.
FUNDS STEERED INTO POLITICS
A former chancellor at the City Col-
lege of San Francisco steered college
funds to campaigns for California bal-
lot measures, according to an internal
investigation reported on by the San
Francisco Chronicle.
The investigation found that the
administrator, Philip R. Day Jr., rout-
ed $35,000 in college funds through a
nonprofit organization and donated the
money to two state education iniias-

classroom
tives in 2006.
The donations and transactions
appear to violate state laws that pro-
hibit using taxpayer money for politi-
cal campaigns and also concealing the
source of political campaign donations.
PAID FOR PERFORMANCE
Among the issues under discussion
by faculty members at Temple Univer-
sity as they negotiate a new contract is
a controversial proposal by the Temple
administration: determining faculty
members's raises based solely on per-
formance.
The proposal calls for "pay per per-
formance" raises by administrators, and
does not include raises based on cost-of-
living increases or other adjustments.
However, the proposal has Temple pro-
fessors concerned, especially because
only half of TU professors currently get
merit pay, Arthur Hochner, presidentcof
the Temple University Associations of
Professionals, told Inside Higher Ed.
