The Michigan junior midfielder became the first Wolverine since 2003 to record a hat trick. Michigan coach Steve Burns called Fuzetti, who also became the Wolverines' seventh-leading scorer of all-time, the "man of the match." "He was just dangerous all day and he was rewarded for it with some big goals," said Burns.. Fuzetti gave Michigan an early lead with an unassisted goal after he had a clean break down the left side of the field in the ninth min- ute. Fuzetti's second goal came seven minutes into the second half when he took a pass up the right side of the field and beat the defender to give Michigan a 3-1llead. Just three minutes later, Fuzetti completed his hat trick. Fueled by some pent-up aggres- sion after losing Wednesday to Kentucky, the Wolverines (5-2-1) left Detroit with an explosive win. But the game wasn't all about Michigan. Detroit tied the game in the 34th minute when Titan miq- fielder Simon Zahra's shot to the top right corner of the net slipped past Michigan redshirt junior goal- ie Patrick Sperry. Detroit fans came alive, shouting that it was now a "new game." Buttheir encouragement seemed to spark the .Wolverines, who responded quickly to change the dynamic. Just five minutes after the Titans' game-tying goal, the Wolverines answered with a goal of their own. Jake Stacy scored on a clean shot from the center of the penalty box to give Michigan a 2-1 lead. Like it did to open the game, Michigan continued to play strong the full 90 minutes to secure a final score of5-1. After Wednesday's tough loss, winning Friday's game was very important to Burns. For the sec- ond time this year, the Wolverines looked to rebound strong from a loss. "There is a lesson in loss that all players learn - that lesson was translated into this game," Burns said. "They really came out and put the energy in and put a good performance together, connecting both defensively and offensively. We. are real proud of them and pleased.with where they are right now." CLIF RttDtR/Daily Sophomore forward Amanda Bowery scared Michigan's lone goal in yesterdays 1-1 double-overtime tie at Arizona Sta lye WolverineS fight dry heat In tie Women's soccer team winless in Arizona trip By RUTH LINCOLN Daily Sports Writer After 110 minutes in the 100- plus degree desert heat, the Michigan women's soccer team was gassed. The Wolverines battled Ari- zona State to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Sunday at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. Unfamiliar and overwhelming for some of the Wolverines, the arid, southwestern temperatures* presented an extra challenge throughout the day. Michigan trainer Tina Scully tried to provide some relief, by pouring water down the players' necks during stoppages. "We were soaked," sophomore forward Amanda Bowery said. with a laugh, "We looked like we had taken a bath or something." After a 1-0 overtime loss at Ari- zona on Friday, the Wolverines (3-4-2) hoped to bounce back in the second leg of the West Coast roadtrip. In Sunday's game, the Wol- verines took control in the 35th minute when senior midfielder and forward Danelle Underwood dribbled the ball down the side- line and passed behind an Arizo- na State defender to connect with Bowery. Bowery fired a rocket in the top-left corner for her team- leading fifth goal of the season, which also gave Michigan a 1-0 lead. "Amanda just continues to be a very, very dangerous part of our attack," Michigan coach Greg Ryan said. "She's just one of these players that makes great runs behind the defenses and will get these great chances right in front of the net. And she's got the com- posure to stick them in the back of the net." The Wolverines held onto their, slight lead until the 85th min- ute, when Arizona State scored off a corner kick. The ball was kicked around in the box for a few moments before Arizona State's AlexandraElstonconnected.Ryan said that the Sun Devils' height and aggressiveness allowed them to better connect on corner kicks and set plays. Michigan had a number of chances for the game-winner in the overtime periods. The most impressive came when freshman forward Natalie Horner found Bowery alone about seven yards in front of the net and ahead of the defense. But Arizona State goalie Briana Silvestri made what Ryan called a "fantastic reaction save." Arizona State (4-2-3) outshot the Wolverines 20-5, including 6-4 in the overtimes. The lop- sided statistic can be attributed to Michigan's 4-2-4 set-up dur- ing the game, with four defenders and forwards and two midfield- ers. With just two Wolverine mid- fielders, the Sun Devils were able to take many shots from nearly 30 yards from the net. But these low- percentage shots are easier to stop than shots in the penalty box. "I wouldn't be surprised if other teams outshoot us," Ryan said. "Today the defense just com- pletely shut down Arizona State from the beginning and didn't give them very many chances inside the penalty box." Arizona andArizona State have been the toughest challenges for Michigan this month. With the Big Ten schedule kicking off this Friday against Iowa, this week- end's games replicated the strong, physical, aggressive play the Wol- verines will see the rest of the season. "For us to play this well, and dominate Arizona State in the overtime period once everyone was gassed, I think it was just a great performance by a young Michigan team," Ryan said.
