Tree-sitters descend from perch
Protesters at the University of
California - Berkeley descended from
their redwood homes last week after
school officials cut off their food and
water supplies.
The protesters had been living in
the tree for 21 months in an attempt
to prevent the school from building a
$125-million athletic center on a plot
of land with 42 redwood trees.
The protesters were arrested and
face charges for trespassing and vio-
lating a court order.
A California court of appeals ruled
that the University could begin build-
ing last week. University officials
have agreed to plant three trees for
each one they cut down.
NO DEGREE FOR YOU
The Michigan State University
Board of Trustees revoked an honor-
ary degree given to Zimbabwe Presi-
dent Robert Mugabe, the Lansing
State Journal reported.
MSU's student government has
been pressuring the Board to revoke
the degree for the past 3 years. The
Board had never complied, saying
there was no protocol for the retrac-
tion of a degree. But President Anna
Lou Simon asked earlier this year that
Mugabe's degree be reconsidered.
The final resolution, passed unani-
mously by the Board, said "Mugabe's
persistent acts of violence, aggression
and intimidation and his pattern of
wanton disregard for human life, even
in the face of substantive and regular
international rebuke, leave Michigan
State University no choice but to act."
The University of Edinburgh
revoked Mugabe's degree last year,
while the University of Massachu-
setts did the same in June.
PRIEST ARRESTED FOR COKE
A Catholic priest has been charged
with selling and using cocaine on the
University of Illinois campus, the
News-Gazette reported.
Rev. Christopher Layden pleaded
innocent to two counts of selling near
a church and another count of pos-
session near a church, which carries
more severe penalties.
Layden had been working with the
Newman Center on campus. He was
ordained as a priest in 2001.
Police arrested Layden after an
informant led them to issue a search
warrant, saying he used cocaine "40
to 50 times" with Layden in the past
7 months.
CPR TRAINING FOR ALL
Emory University's Emergency
Medical Services has decided to train
the entire freshman class in CPR,
the Chronicle of Higher Education
reported.
EMS hopes to make students more
aware of the services EMS offers.
"We want to create awareness that
we exist and make them feel comfort-
able about utilizing us," said senior
Kevin Smith, chief of EMS.
EMS technicians have incorporat-
ed the training into freshman orienta-
tion, using CPR dummies.
