2A- Thursday, September 4, 2008 0 The Michigan Daily - michigandailycom A familiar face LSA senior Alex Larson encour- ages incoming studencs co Start the wave before taking their placement tests, chant "Go glue!" at every opportunity and walk like zombies through the Diag. For Larson, a returning student orientation leader with the Office of New Student Programs, incoming students are oftentimes too serious about starting college when they take their first steps as a University student.' Larson said his positive experi- ence as -a freshman leads him to show the ropes to first-year Wolver- "I really want to help new stu- dents adjust to the transition from high school to college," he said. The 21-year-old said he met about 1,500 new students on the job this summer. He guessed that he shook about that many hands during last year's orientation, too. In addition to giving campus tours last fall, Larson was part of a theater show put on for incoming international students. The sketch was intended to ease the culture shock some international students face when coming to an American college. "I was cast as the loud obnoxious American roommate," he said. Larson, who called himself "loud," said he believed exaggerat- ing the American stereotype would help ease the tension his students might feel. The Holland, Mich., native said having conversations with students differentcfrom himself has given him a perspective few others receive. "It's a chance to kind of see U of M at a whole new level of diversity," he said. "It's cool to see, as an Amer- ican student, where these students are coming from." Larson left little doubt about his commitment to his job when asked what he'd like to do for a career. The math major said he'd like to someday hold a management position within the University's student orientation program. If he can't find that line of work in Ann Arbor, he said he'd be willing to look at such programs at, other colleges. He said he was in no rush to leave. "You may see me back for the summer sf 09," Larson said. ESH WAR THIR UNAV UKKARAS U LSA senior Ales Larssn said his freshman experience inspired him to becsme an orientation leader.
