"I keep on working for justice and equality," said the 78-year-old, a University alum who has devoted his life to advocating for the LGBT community. "We must work until we all are free and enjoy full human and civil rights." Toy, recognized as the first person in the state to publicly declare his homosexuality, said his commit- ment stems in part from the injustices he endured in middle school when other schoolchildren criticized his mixed race and poverty. Toy got started with the LGBT community in 1969 when he attended what he called a "gay meeting," an open gathering of the state's homosexuals. Young Republicans: Palin's daughter's pregnancy shouldn't impact race * CAMPAIGN 2008 Getting shut out of the Grand Old parties By ANDY KROLL Daily News Editor St. PAUL, Minn. - With the dra- ma surrounding Hurricane Gustav's arrival barely having subsided here at the Republican National Con- vention, a new media storm blew into town with the news that vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin's daughter is pregnant. Just as soon as the Alaska gov- ernor announced that her 17-year- old daughter, Bristol Palin, was five months pregnant, a nationwide news frenzy ensued. Rumors flew about the father of the child and Sarah Palin's future as McCain's vice presidential nominee. But coming to the defense of both mother and daughter are young Re- publicans here in St. Paul. Not only do they express their undivided support for the Palin family, but, for the most part, they also criticize the media for what they believe to be unfairly overblown coverage of the news. The support for Bristol Pa- lin's decision to keep her child was unanimous among young Republi- cans here at Xcel Energy Arena. "They are embracingtheir daugh- ter as she brings a new life into the world with enthusiasm, and that's the most important thing," said Jes- sica Colon, president of the Young Republican National Federation. An enthusiastic politico from Lafayette, Colorado, wearing but- tons reading "Jihad This" and "Gun Control is hitting your target," 22- year-old Kimberly Peticolas said she admired Bristol Palin for stick- ing to her convictions and marrying the father of the child, 18-year-old Levi Johnston. "She does have the family val- ues, clearly, and she continues to have pro-life values like her mother does," Peticolas said. "And I really respect that she's sticking to those convictions even though she's real- See PALIN, Page 3A MINNEAPOLIS - I knew from the first furrowed brow, nervous glance and cautious examination of my press credentials that I wasn't getting in the door. Never mind that I'd received two separate invitations to this shindig from Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop and Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard. Any plans I had to see Repub- licans at the parties were now foiled. The first sumo-sized bouncer heard my plea to get into the party, whispered something into a small lapel mic, and then another intimidating bouncer stepped out- side to scrutinize my credentials and hear my case. He mumbled something into his walkie-talkie and soon after a woman - whomi presumed to be some sortof press secretary - emerged. She curtly informed me that I could briefly interview Bishop and Bouchard for a few minutes outside of the club but that I would not, under any circumstances, be allowed inside, despite my insis- tence that I'd been invited - twice. A short while later Bishop and Bouchard appeared, and as one of the sumo-sized bouncers stood over my shoulder I began asking the two delegates a few Michigan- See KROLL, Page 7A AP PHOTO Alaska Gov.
