And in x. doing so, he 4 passed his so-called impassable final test: WINS. 122 ending his LOSSES: 40 coaching BIG TEN career on top, TITLES:Five both literally and figura- NATIONAL tively. TITLES:One Carr left Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium on the shoulders of his players, the ones he repeatedly told not to play this game just for him. It didn't work for Bo Schembechler 18 years earlier, so it wouldn't work for Carr, either, right? Not quite. Carr's team would have none of that talk. No. 9 Florida may have been the heavy favorite on paper - the home-state, defending National Champion from the supposedly superior Southeastern Conference was playinganunranked Michigan squad, after all - but it didn't trans- late on the field. Trailing early, the speedy Gators and their Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback did everything they could to regain the momentum. But fake punts and misdirection can only get you so far when you're battling a team hellbent on sending its beloved coach out in style. "I couldn't ask for anything bet- ter for this man and his career and what he's meant to Michigan foot- ball, what he's meant to the whole sport of college football," Athletic Director Bill Martin said. "He's been a great ambassador for us, and I'm so happy he went out this way." - SCOTT BELL Nov. 19, 2007 - Michigan's all- time leading passer returned from injury to play with Michigan's all- time leading rusher in an attempt to cement their legacies in front of Michigan's all-time second larg- est crowd. But in their final game at Mich- igan Stadium, a group of the Wol- verines' finest seniors failed once again to do what it couldn't do three times before. And coach- ing his final game in the rivalry, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr failed once again to top Ohio State coach Jim Tressel. By losing to Ohio State, 14-3, Chad Henne, Mike Hart and oth- ers did more than lose a final trip to the Rose Bowl, the Big Ten Championship and the chance to cap off an improbable turnaround of a season. Instead, the senior class marred its legacy with two haunting fig- ures: 0 and 4. "We had a chance to win the championship here, and we didn't," senior safety Jamar Adams said. "That should say it all." And if it doesn't, the game's sta- tistics sure do. In a performance harkening back to Michigan's Snow Bowl victory over Ohio State in 1950, the Wolverine offense mustered just 91 yards. Yes, the offense many believed would be unstop- pable managed merely a field goal in its biggest game of the season. In the second half, it had the ball past midfield just once. "We didn't get anything done," senior center Adam Kraus said. "So it's all on us. But those will be relegated to footnote status in a season that will largely be remembered for its bookends: Traditional power- house falls in one of the greatest college football upsets ever. And: Lloyd Carr, in his final reg- ular-season game as head coach, loses to the Buckeyes, defeating them just once in his final seven years. - JACKHERMAN 4 GOING TO BE IN TOWN THIS SUMMER?
