The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com PRIVACY From Page 1A Some schools have been more guarded with student informa- tion. Last September, the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology came under fire for withholding information from the mother of a suicidal student, citing student privacy concerns. The student later committed suicide, and the student's mother sued MIT for withholding information. There is, though, a legal dif- ference between when a regular person discloses information and when a counselor does. A patient-physician relationship clause in University policy forbids Counseling and Psychological Services counselors from disclos- ing information about a student without that student's written permission. The only exception is if a counselor believes the student is a risk to themselves or others. In that case, Greensaid, the counselor is required to call the Department of Public Safety. Ian Randall, a graduate student in the School of Public Health, agreed with the University's policy to withhold student information. "The fact that the violence of Virginia Tech has been so publi- cized has made people quick to act," he said. "But if there is a pro- cess in place to deal with student mental health issues, I think it should be followed in order to pro- tect student privacy." Bernard said it's still more dif- ficult for a counselor to release information about students than it is for the general public. "There maybe some grey areas, particularly for people in counsel- ing services, as to when they step outside their role as counselors," Bernard said. "But if you or I see an observation of someone acting strangely, then there are a lot of places that you can call." REACTION From Page 1A Construction crews are work- ing on a strict timeline to ensure the stadium will br open for foot- ball games until the renovations are completed in Aug. 2010, mak- ing it impossible to pause work in April, Cunningham said. Many students have suggested that the University use Crisler Arena, which is located next to the Big House, but the arena has only a capacity of only 14,000. Michi- gan Stadium, the nation's largest football stadium, lists its capacity as 107,501. Sue Eklund, associate vice president for student affairs, said Crisler's capacity would would reduce the number of tickets avail- able to each graduate from eight to two or three. "We're askingstudents to recog- nize that everyone is disappointed with this situation," Eklund said. "Everyone wants to make the best of it, whatever the location." Eklund said a meeting would be held next week to discuss the pos- sible solutions with students. She said holding the commencement at Crisler Arena is still an option. If that were the case, the University would likely use a video feed from Crisler to Hill Auditorium, where additional guests could watch the ceremony.. Michigan Student Assembly President Mohammad Dar said the University needs to give students a chance to make suggestions on the process. "It is evident that this decision deeply upset the students," Dar said in a statement. "And right now, they need to have a say in their graduation and they need transparency in the reassessment of every option." Despite the fact that construc- tion is scheduled to continue until 2010, Eklund said only this year's ceremony would be affected. O'DELL From Page 1A crime and security policies." Along with establishing a trans- parent department, O'Dell seeks to reduce the number of break-ins on campus. He also said, however, that EMU sometimes gets an unde- served reputation as being anunsafe campus. "There is a high number of break- ins at this university, but in most every other category Eastern Mich- igan actually is average or below average," he said. O'Dell was hired in a national search after Hall's retirement. Donald Loppnow, provost and executive vice president of the uni- versity, said O'Dell emerged at the top of the list for many reasons. "We chose Greg O'Dell partly because of his leadership style and his creative thinking, but also because he is so familiar with the area, having been a graduate of Thursday, January 10, 2008 - 7A Eastern Michigan," he said. Loppnow also said O'Dell's expe- rience in several different areas of police work was a major factor in his appointment. O'Dell has served on the AAPD almost continually since 1988. He served a brief stint in Monroe, Mich. in 1996. O'Dell's decision to leave will be a loss for the Ann Arbor Police Department, but a gain for the uni- versity, said AAPD Lt. Michael Log- ghe. "I've worked with Greg for about 20 years, and I think he's a perfect fit for Eastern Michigan," Logghe said. "He is very professional, and a great administrator, which is really somethingthey need right now." Logghe said O'Dell will be a great fit because he has experience work- ing with college students. "You're going to see me in dorms, talking to students about safety," O'Dell said. "I am going to be active- ly involved, and I want this depart- ment to-work as a team." the michigan HUGE 6 BEDROOM house!
