Official: Dalai Lama trip still planned
DALAI LAMA From Page 1A
he is also scheduled to speak in
Seattle, Wash. in early April.
Rimpoche said he expects the
Dalai Lama to discuss the current
situation in Tibet when he comes
to the University to speak.
"It will be on everyone's mind,
and it's on his mind too, so he will
talk about it," he said.
Rimpoche said the Dalai Lama

Council, said scheduling conflicts
made it difficult for members of
his council to take part in past
Greek Weeks.
"Members haven't participated
because the size of their chapters
were not taken into account," he
said, pointing out that some MGC
chapters have only a handful of
members and are often "busy with
other things on campus."
would likely reiterate his demands
for the Chinese government to
give Tibetans greater autonomy,
like freedom of religion.
Gallagher said the Dalai Lama's
speech at the University would be
an ideal forum for him to express
his views on the situation in
Tibet.
The Dalai Lama has provoked
a reaction from the Chinese gov-
ernment speaking before Ameri-
Mickey said Bojovic and
Greek Week co-director Ryan
Glass, an LSA senior, were key
to getting the four councils to
collaborate.
He said Bojovic and Glass have
been hosting dinners and parties
for members of different councils,
encouraging them to get to know
each other.
"Ryan and Halie have done
an incredible job in making the
Greek Week experience more
welcome and really more pos-
sible to do for our respective fra-
can government officials, she
said, but at the University, he can
reach a wide audience without
worrying about political ramifi-
cations.
The Dalai Lama has called the
current situation in Tibet a cul-
tural genocide, but Gallagher said
it's possible that circumstances
could "change dramatically" in
the weeks before the Dalai Lama
comes to campus.
ternities and sororities," Mickey
said.
LSA senior Randal Seriguchi,
president of the National Pan-Hel-
lenic Council, said the promotion
of diversity at the University and
the desire of the Greek System to
branch out to all of its members
helped to unify the four councils
this year.
"The effort to shift the priority.
to have a more united Greek com-
munity creates a stronger purpose
to branch out with people who are
willing to work," he said.
TICKETS

a student newspaper. The tick-
ets sold out three days after they
went on sale.
Although the student section
of the Big House accommodates
about 20,000 fans, the University
of Michigan doesn't limit ticket
sales to this capacity. Instead, a
seat is guaranteed to every stu-
dent who wants to buy a ticket.
Last year, more than 3,000 extra
tickets were sold, with these stu-
dents placed in seats scattered
around the stadium.
Bodnar said the proposed pol-
icy was an effort to reduce the
number of incoming freshmen
with seats outside the student
section.
To make up for the displace-
ment, he said, the Athletic
Department had to eliminate
partner tickets, which graduate
students used to be able to buy for
their spouse, child or domestic
partner.
Dhruv Sud, Rackham Student
Government vice president, said
graduate students would revisit
the partner ticket issue in the
future but students should have
priority over family members
for student section tickets. He
also acknowledged that gradu-
ate students don't seem to be as
passionate about sports as under-
graduates.
Sud said he thought most grad-
uate students understood the
University's decision to eliminate
partner tickets.
Huge block of Antarctic ice collapses
WASHINGTON (AP) - Achunk
of Antarctic ice about seven times
the size of Manhattan suddenly
collapsed, putting an even greater
portion of glacial ice at risk, scien-
tists said yesterday.
Satellite images show the run-
away disintegration of a 160-
square-mile chunk in western
Antarctica, which started Feb. 28.
It was the edge of the Wilkins ice
shelf and has been there for hun-
dreds, maybe 1,S00 years.
This is the result of global
warming, said British Antarctic
Survey scientist David Vaughan.
Because scientists noticed sat-
ellite images within hours, they
diverted satellite cameras and even
flew an airplane over the ongoing
collapse for rare pictures and video.
"It's an event we don't get to
see very often," said Ted Scambos,
lead scientist at the National Snow
and Ice Data Center in Boulder,
Colo. "The cracks fill with water
and slice off and topple... That gets
to be a runaway situation."
While icebergs naturally break
away from the mainland, collapses
like this are unusual but are hap-
pening more frequently in recent
decades, Vaughan said. The col-
lapse is similar to what happens to
hardened glass when it is smashed
with ahammer, he said.
