The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com Friday, March 21 2008 - 7 GEO From Page 1 progressed, crowds of onlookers gathered around the protesters. GEO President Helen Ho, a Com- munication Studies GSI, said the demonstration showed the union's need totake action outside bargain- ing sessions to convince the Univer- sity to increase GSI salaries. "The administrations have come to the table three times a week with nothing to propose to us, so we are really hoping that this demonstration show solidar- ity and strength," Ho said. "We are hoping that the visibility of this action will be enough to sig- nal to the University that we have people who care and people who are vocal about it, and that we have students who are not afraid of political action." Earlier in the week, Jeff Frum- kin, the University's senior direc- tor of academic human resources, said the University was still hope- ful it could reach an agreement with GEO to prevent a strike. "We hope everyone can go to class, both the students and the instructors," he said. Nobody likes the idea of that instruction being interfered with. it's unfair to undergraduates." A half hour into the demonstra- tion, hundreds of protesters began marching from the Diag toward Regents' Plaza. Halting traffic and chanting along the way, they ended in front of the Fleming Administration Building, where a meeting of the University Board of Regents was underway. Though the current contract negotiations don't directly impact her, LSA freshmanAngelaVerkade marched to express support for her GSIs. "I really love all the work and teaching that they do," she said. "I think the rally will be effec- tive. They have a point and they are definitely making a lot of noise about it." Once the demonstrators arrived at the Regents'Plaza, several mem- bers of GEO spoke to the crowd, as did David Hecker, president of the Michigan division of the Ameri- can Federation of Teachers. "A rally like this shows to Presi- dent Coleman and the Board of Regents that graduate student instructors are serious about get- ting a new fair contract, and they are going to do what it takes to get that contract," Hocker said. "A rally of this size shows the commitment of graduate student instructors to fight for what they deserve." About 100 demonstrators from GEO entered the Michigan Union from the plaza, filling the build- ing's hallways and Amer's Caf6 with chants. The GSIs then filed into Wolverine Room A, where yesterday's bargaining session between GEO and the University's negotiating team took place. During that session, the Univer- sity's negotiating team bumped its previous proposal of a 3-percent increase in the contract's first year to 3.9 percent, according to Patrick O'Mahen, a GEO spokes- man and Political Science GSL Although GEO and the Univer- sity's bargaining team agreed to 3-percent salary increases in the second and third year of their new contract, GEO has asked for a 9- percent increase in the first year. Kilpatrick to learn fate soon DETROIT (AP) - A two- month-old text-messaging sex scandal will come to a head on Monday when a county prosecutor announces whether she intends to pursue perjury or other charges against Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aide. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy will hold a news confer- ence at 11 a.m. Monday to release the results of her investigation into testimony Kilpatrick and ex-Chief, of Staff Christine Beatty gave last summer in a whistle-blowers' trial. Kilpatrick and Beatty denied under oath that they had a roman- tic relationship in 2002 and 2003. But that testimony was contradict- ed by published excerpts of sexu- ally explicit text messages left on Beatty's city-issued pager. Worthy's decision has been anticipated for weeks. She announced an independent investigation shortly after the Detroit Free Press first reported the text messages in late January. A conviction of lying under oath can bring up to 15 years' imprison- ment. Under Detroit's charter, Kil- patrick would be removed as mayor if he is convicted of a felony. Kilpatrick says he will be "vin- dicated" when all aspects of the scandal are made public. "I will be politically vindicated, I will be legally vindicated and then people have the opportunity to look at what this city has done," he said. the michigan daily phone: 734.7640557 ~~~~fax: 734.936.1054 c a sfes OLD WEST SIDE/DOWN Town area Large 2 BR available Fall 2008. Therefore, take it easy. Don't be pushy with people, especially partners and close friends. And don't be pushy with parents and bosses! Chill out. TAURUS (April 201to May 20) Avoid arguments with others today, especially at work. You might feel that you're being attacked. (It's just the Full Moon energy gone awry - plus, people are pushy today.) GEMINI (May 21to June 20) You might be disappointed in a friend today, especially someone who is involved with your children. Romance is also strained. Don't overreact to things. Let it be. CANCER (June 21to July 22) Power struggles with parents and bosses are likely. You can't seem to keep your home life happy or your job. If you do, you're spreading yourself too thin. (It was ever/thus.) LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) This is an accident-prone day. Take extra precautions. Slow down. Don't drive fast. Be aware of everyone around you. Think before you speak. Be patient with yourself and others. (Gasp.) VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Disagreements about money or shared property are highly likely today. Furthermore, people don't want to be cooperative. They're stubborn and unmoving. Yikes! (Postpone important decisions.) LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) This is a classic day for power strng- gles, because today's Fullk Mon is in your sign. Yoa don't like conflict. Therefore, if things get tense, run away! SCORPIO (Oct. 23 toNov. 21) Difficulties at work can arise easily today. People either oppose you or are trying to prove something different. (It's quite exhausting.) Demonstrate grace under pressure. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 toDec. 21) Romance is in thetoilet today. In addi- tion, parents might have difficulty deal- ing with children. Give everyone some extra space. Relax and take it slower. (It's the Full Moon today.) CAPRICORN (Dec. 22to Jan. 19) Relations with authority figures are definitely tested today. Family members might be tense. Don't suggest improve- ments to others. (That will go over like a lead balloon.) AQUARIUS (Jan. 20to Feb. 18) This is an accident-prone day for your sign because of today's Full Moon. Things can distract you or make you tense. Therefore, be patient. Slow down. PISCES (Feb. 19to March 20) Financial matters might disappoint you today. You might encounter obsta- cles to how you earn your money or how you spend it. Go gently. YOU BORN TODAY Many people born on this day are talented and versa- tile. It's vital that you be able to express yourself creatively. Fortunately, you have courage and you're very direct about going after what you want. You can be a fanciful dreamer, yet you're a hard worker!
