The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 7A Foreclosures up by more than 60 percent this year Safety issues force Southwest Airlines to ground 43 planes LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nearly 60 percent more U.S. homes faced foreclosure in February than in the same monthlast year, with Nevada, California and Florida showing the highest foreclosure rates, a research firm said yesterday. A total of 223,651 homes across the nation received at least one notice from lenders last month related to overdue payments, up 59.8 percent from 139,922 a year earlier, according to Irvine, Calif.- based RealtyTrac Inc. Nearly half of the homes on the most recent list had slipped into default for the first time. Nevada had the nation's highest foreclosure rate, with one in every 165 households receiving at least one foreclosure-related notice. It had 6,167 properties facing foreclo- sure, a 68 percent increase from a year earlier and up 1 percent from January, RealtyTrac said. Most of the troubled properties were located in California, Florida, Texas, Michigan and Ohio - states where home prices have plunged as the housing boom went bust. DALLAS (AP) - Southwest Airlines Co. canceled flights yes- terday and temporarily grounded 43 planes to examine if they were sound enough to carry passengers, the latest twist in the low-cost car- rier's saga of missed safety inspec- tions and civil penalties. The groundings affected about 8 percent of Southwest's fleet, and came as the airline faces a $10.2 million civil penalty for continuing to fly nearly 50 planes that hadn't been inspected for cracks in their fuselages. Southwest shares fell more than 9 percent before closing down 7.3 percent. Since the Federal Aviation Administration announced the penalty last week, Southwest has endured a steady drip of bad public- ity, which is unusual for the nation's most consistently profitable carrier and one that has never had an acci- dent that killed passengers or crew members. Yesterday, word filtered out that the airline had taken 38 planes out of service, along with five others that were already in hangars undergoing routine maintenance. the michigan daily AWESOME HOUSES: 6-bdrm NEW 6 E house- 831 Brookwood, 7 bdrm. hse.- game tab] 1319 S.
