The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com Friday, February 22, 2008 - 7A TEXTBOOKS From Page 1A the battle against boosted book prices. Statistics senior lecturer Brenda Gunderson, chair of the Textbook Task Force; said she helps accom- modate students who use older textbook editions by giving them a list of equivalent page numbers in the newer editions. Gunderson said shekeeps several copies ofthe text- book on reserve in the library and publishes her textbook list online monthsbefore each term starts. But some professors said cre- ating a deadline for renting texts could be prohibitive. English Prof. William Worthen said deciding which books to use for a class can be a lengthy process. He said he also often changes the syllabus at the last minute after discovering that certain books aren't available. "You don't know they're not in print until you order them," he said. Worthen, an author of several drama writing books, said publish- ers often resortcto publishing new or updatededitions oftextbookstobol- ster sales. As aresult, students can't sell their usedbooks for as much. Students said they were optimis- tic about the University's efforts. MSA President Mohammad Dar, a member of the Textbook Task Force, said uBook and the early textbook lists will give stu- dents more options. He said the development of the book exchange shows attentive- ness to student concerns about text book prices. "Student voice was what pro- pelled the conversation," he said. LSA senior Hannah Smith sur- veyed student interest in uBook and submitted the information to the Office of the Provost. Smith's group found that most students were excited about the potential to buy and sell books locally - and, most importantly, at cheaper prices. "The general consensus," she said, "is, 'Yeah, we're always get- ting ripped off with textbook resell.'" Totenberg details Court's shift TOTENBERG From Page1A_ To support this claim, she point- ed toward the court's changing position on abortion, which began with a 7-2 decision upholding abor- tion in Roe v. Wade to the recent Gonzales v. Carhart case in which the court ruled 5-4 against partial birth abortion rights. "Really only one thing changed - the composition of the court," she said. In the past 25 years, Toten- berg said, some of the Court's most historically liberal judges, appointed by John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, have retired and been replaced by more conservative nominees put in power by Ronald Regan and George H.W. Bush. She said that trend contin- ued in the George W. Bush presidency, with the appoint- ment of Samuel Alito to replace O'Connor. "We are seeing the flipside of the (Earl) Warren court," Totenberg said. "That's not to say justices are not trying to strike down laws that are unconstitutional. I'm just point- ing outatrend." Totenberg said the Court's cur- rent abortion laws could make it harder and more expensive for clin- ics to operate. "You don't need to reverse Roe vs. Wade outright to have the same effect," she said. "I suspect that is the direction the Supreme Court is headed." After the lecture, doctoral stu- dent Samantha Worzalla said she attended the event because she's an NPR fan. "I just wanted to be more informed," she said. the michigan daily BEST HOUSE FALL 2008!
