The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com STUDY From Page 1A Participants rated the negative qualities in their relationships with spouses and significant others, chil- dren and best friends. One said, "My (spouse/partner, child, friend) gets on my nerves," and the other said "My (spouse/partner, child, friend) SHIRTS From Page 1A the T-shirts. At the beginning of winter semes- ter, the Hall Council sent an e-mail apologizing to all South Quad resi- dents, and to SAPAC. University Housing spokesman Peter Logan said in a statement yesterday that University Housing doesn't condone the T-shirts. "University Housing considers the South Quad t-shirt message inappropriate and unsettling," he makes too many demands on me." Antonucci said one reason for higher negativity in younger rela- tionships might be that younger individuals are more expressive and intense in their relation- ships. "Younger people are more engaged in the discovery of life," she said. "So they react with more intensity, and that intensity is both said. "The message is contraryto our mission and values for developing inclusive and respectful communi- ties within University residences." LSA sophomore Richard Fernan- dez, a member of the Hall Council, said the Council didn't know how many T-shirts were printed or sold, but said they cost about $3 each to make. The South Quad Hall Coun- cil hosted a forum Monday night to address concerns about the T- shirts. Many studentswalked away from that event feeling underwhelmed positive and negative." LSA junior Heather Studer, who got married March of last year, said that being in college plays a role in the way students view romantic relationships. "No one really thinks of them as long term," she said. "Some people would rather work on their school career and may not necessarily put their relationship with a person first." with what took place, though. LSA and School of Education junior Erika McCollum, who works for University Housing and is a member of SAPAC and the F-word, said she was just as upset about the forum as she was the T-shirts them- selves, because the event didn't focus on the T-shirts. "I actually felt less safe walking out of the forum than I did walk- ing in to it," she said. "It's really upsetting to me that my employer would put this shirt on and then allow students who put the shirts on to maintain this power within the The study found that contrary to romantic relationships, friendships improved over time. Older people, though, still reported fewer nega- tive friendships than younger par- ticipants did. LSA senior Sharada Maddox said younger people tend to enter rela- tionships for the wrong reasons. She said people base friendships on numbers rather than merit, which community and to not take account- ability for what they have done." LSA junior Amanda Grigg, a member of the F-word's governing board, agreed. "The fact that the forum was about hip hop was scapegoating and almost racist," she said. "The forum blamed hip hop for the fact that peo- ple feel unsafe, when the problem was that the Hall Council members allowed these shirts to go through." The South Quad Hall Council said it a written statement yesterday that it regretted for its decision to print the T-shirts. could lead to more clashes between individuals. "People do focus on the number of friends as opposed to the quality," she said. "People want to say, 'I have 500 friends,' so you get a circle of friends that aren't so like-minded." In their report, ° University researchers pointed out that past research suggests friendships decrease in negativity over time "Our decision to include the text was wrong, and, for this reason, we stopped sales a week after they began and have not sold one since," the statement read. Grigg said she didn't think halt- ing the sale of the shirts violated free speech. "I think that to stop Soulja Boy from singing the song would be a violation of free speech," she said. "The problem is that this isn't about someone's free speech, it's about Housing condoning sexual vio- lence." LSA sophomore Bonita Goh said Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 7A because they become more volun- tary. Another reason, they said, might be that older people view friendships as less demanding because they can devote more time to friendships. Antonucci said younger people didn't necessarily always place less importance relationships. "I think it's a dichotomous thing," she said. she doesn't understand the reason for the outcry. "I don't know what the brouhaha is about," she said. "I've heard that the song is degrading, but I would assume there were women on the committee who voted to approve the T-shirts. Maybe this is a reflec- tion that a select group of women are offended." Grigg said the shirt's message might have garnered more criticism if it hadbeen slightly more overt. "If the shirt said 'Rape that whore,' I think there were would be avery different response," she said. the michigan daily KERRYTOWN AREA 3 BDRM., 3/4 people on Kerrytown/Catherine.
