The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com Thursday, February 7, 2008 - 7A BAR From Page 1A laws allow distillers to sell their products directly to retail loca- tions. Distillers in Ann Arbor are required to sell products through distributors. Many of the bar's patrons said they will miss the quirky nature of Leopold Bros. The pub, which opened in the fall of 1999, offers typical bar games like darts and pool, but also features a variety of board games like UNO and Scrabble. Rackham student Miles Put- nam said the pub drew a very different crowd than most bars closer to campus do. "It's just people who want to play a board game and drink at the same time," he said. Andrew McIntyre, a senior in the Taubman College of Archi- tecture and Urban Planning, said he'll miss the bar's diverse envi- ronment. "It's open to people of all ages," he said. "It was somewhere you could go to be with professors and people in the community." Putnam said he thinks it will be hard to replace Leopold Bros. He said he understands why there might be more demand for a sports bar or a more mainstream pub in that location. "I'm not totally surprised that they're closing down," he said. . Leopold originally announced that the bar was closing on the blog annarborisoverrated.com. In a post, he said, "Our lease expires in the summer, and shock- ingly (note heavy sarcasm), our landlords asked for an obscene amount per month in rent, so we're done." Despite the fact that increasing costs are forcing him out, Leopold says he has no hard feelings. "The rent that they're asking for is fair," he said. "We're not the only one - there are have been quite a few places that have been forced to close." He also said he'll remem- ber the Ann Arbor area. "We're going to miss the Univer- sity of Michigan and catching hockey games and field hockey games and seeing all the laptops during finals around our place," he said. everyday purposes like making BILL purchases with a credit card. But From Page 1A that's risky, Hsien-Chang said. "We'd probably have to go to the steps to secure its driver's license embassy to get a new passport," and identification procedures Hsien-Chang said. "If we lose it, sooner rather than later. it's not only a problem that we have "We shouldn't be dragging our to reapply, but someone else may feet on these bills," said Sen. HEARING From Page 1A Attorney Leonard Niehoff, who spoke on behalf of the University of Michigan, Michigan State Univer- sity and Wayne State University, said the state's public universities are only responsible for implement- ing the law as it is determined by the state and therefore shouldn't be included as defendants if the case is sent to trial. Attorney Shanta Driver, nation- al co-chair and spokeswoman of pro-affirmative action group By Any Means Necessary, empha- sized the significance of the judge's decision, calling Cantrell v. Granholm "the most important civil rights case before any court in the nation" before the judge. She told the court that uphold- ing Proposal 2 could have "devas- tating consequences" for black and Latino students trying to attend certain colleges. About 30 high school students attended the hearing, which began around 2:30 p.m. A handful of University of Michigan students -- some of whom were BAMN members - went to the hearing. After the hearing, Shandria Vaughn, a black, Detroit-area high school student, said the case was important to her because it would likely decide whether she could attend a school like the University of Michigan. If Lawson determines that Pro- posal 2 is unconstitutional, the decision will likely be met with a series of appeals, sending it to a higher court. WANT TO JOIN THE DAILY?
