The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com Thursday, January 31, 2008 - 7A TRAINER From Page 1A this summer. Robinson works with some of the biggest names in swimming, includ- ing Kaitlin Sandeno, Erik Vendt and Phelps. But strangely, when he accepted the job four years ago after graduating from Adrian College, he had no swimming experience, had never seen a swim meet and even admits he didn't know who Phelps was. Today, though, there are few people who are more proud to be a part of the rich tradition of Michi- gan swimming. "Men's swimming has won more national championships than any othersport atthis University,"Robin- son said. "Everyday I come in, I have MCGOWAN From Page 1A University Regent, McGowan recalled the Supreme Court's2003 ruling in favor of the University's admissions policies - one that allowed the school to continue using affirmative action as long as it wasn't based on a point system. She also hailed the Board's deci- sion to add the phrase "gender identity and expression" to the a constant reminder of how special it is to work here and how lucky Iam to work for Michigan Swimming." Robinson works all day, even though his routine starts well before the crack of dawn. His morn- ings include preparing Gatorade and milkshakes for the team, help- ing with stretches and massages before practice at 5:15 a.m. and even performing some electrotherapy. Through the afternoon, athletes come to Robinson for physical ther- apy, and during practices he can be found strolling the pool deck, mak- ing sure swimmers are performing at their best. Practice ends at 5 p.m., which means there's still weight training or dry-land exercises for teams to go through. Robinson is still avail- able to help with the team's aches and pains following workouts. non-discrimination clause of the University's bylaws lastyear. McGowan also praised the building projects regents have approved in recent years, citing the development of the School of Public Policy, North Quad and the planned $102-million additions to Law School. McGowan's decision to step aside surprised fellow University Regent Julia Darlow (D-Ann Arbor). "Rebecca is someone who is devoted to the University and gives As if his job didn't keep him busy enough, Robinson has been a train- er at international swim meets like the 2007 Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At that meet, Robinson said having a roommate like Auburn coach David Marsh, who won a combined 12 NCAA titles with the Tigers, and talkingto swimming legends like Gary Hall, taught him a lot about how he could work better with swimmers. "It was a great experience and you just pick up a wealth of informa- tion," Robinson said. "I think itreal- ly helped with the type of care I've been able to provide the athletes at Michigan." After the Olympic trials in July, Robinson was selected by USA Swimming to work with the U.S. Olympic team during its training at Stanford before departing for Bei- her all to the job, making it easier for everyone," Darlow said. University Regent Larry Deitch (D-Bingham Farms), who was elected to the board at the same time as McGowan, said the two had teamed up on many proj- ects, including co-sponsoring the "gender identity and expression" amendment and advocating for the expansion of domestic partner benefits at the University. Deitch, the only other member of the board who is also up for re- jing. In the future, he aspires to be a trainer for the U.S. Olympic team at the 2012 games in London. While Robinson may train with several high-profile athletes, his work remains mostly behind the scenes. "It's all about the athletes and coaches," he said. "That's what peo- ple come to see and I just try to get them out there. I think in the past the attitude was just tough it out, but (trainers) have become more important because we have allowed athletes to prolongtheir careers." Robinson says he could see him- self working to prolong the careers of Michigan athletes for the rest of his career. This might seem like a long time, but he knows as soon as the last race ends in Beijing, the clocks starts counting down to 2012. election in December, declined to say whether he would seek a third term. McGowan, who lives less than a mile from campus, said she looks forward to serving the rest of her term and will continue to help the University in some capacity after December. "It's a fabulous responsibility and I've loved every minute," she said. - Daily News Editor Kelly Fraser contributed to this report. How Facebook could hurt you FACEBOOK, From Page 1A everything that happens to you," she said. Borland cited a survey where about 82 percent of employers responded by saying a student's chances at being offered a job would be hindered if the employ- er saw something negative on an applicant's profile. Students can control what employers and other strangers can and cannot view by using Facebook's privacy settings. But sometimes, the material that cir- culates on the Internet is out of a student's control once it's origi- nally posted. Jack Bernard, the Universi- ty's assistant general counsel, emphasized this point during the discussion by sharing a story about a student who posted "excruciating details on his geni- tals" online. When told that the material was accessible to almost every- one, the student thought the delete key would make it go away. But sometimes it's not that sim- ple, Bernard said. Bernard said material is easy to upload, but not as easy to erase permanently. Deleted data is often retained on a server that can be preserved and possibly accessed in the future. On top of that, other users may have copied the material before a poster has deleted it, he added. Paul Conway, an associate professor in the School of Infor- mation, said that in the future, society might have looser stan- dards about what is inappropri- ate because almost everyone will have an online past. Conway said the technology, not the behavior of students is what's changing. "If you went a little crazy at 18, so what?" he said. "There are lines, but there is a tendency to be overprotective to what's already been going on for the past 50 years," he said. LSA sophomore Ilana Borson said she already keeps her Face- book settings on private, but the forum taught her to be more cau- tious about what personal infor- mation is posted on the Internet. "There are things I wouldn't want my mother seeing, but I wouldn't put anything up there I wouldn't want my friends to see," she said. - Geoffrey Gaurano contributed to this report. the miehigan aly IMMEDIATE OCCUPANCY. 6 bed- TRE room house located near U-M Campus. 6 Bdrm: 1 Great location for Med and Engineer- 6 Bdrm: 1 ing students.
