The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com November 19, 2007 - 5B MAIZE GAUGE The Michigan Daily football writers break down the weekend's stats that don't show up in the box- score. The defense-o-meter measures the intensity of the defense, the Carr-o-meter judges Lloyd Carr's demeanor following the game and the hypemeter measures the fans' game performance. DEFENSE-0-METER 3 You really can't blame the defense for this loss. Sure, it screwed up when the unit let Ohio State running back get loose on his 62-yard touchdown run on the Buckeye's first play of the sec- Crables ond half. But aside from that blemish, the Wolverine defense kept the game in reach, even though its offensive counterparts couldn't move the ball. The defense was on the field for too much of the game, and it still surrendered just two touchdowns. CARR-O-METER 2/ Saturday's press conference wasn't the press conference people will remember about this weekend - it's today's 4 that everyone is buzzing about. Carr will retire today, Lloyd just two days after deflecting questions about his Carrs future in Saturday's post-game press conference. MISSOURI: The Tigers, like the rest of the Big 12, have been flying under the radar all season long. Not anymore. Missouri faces Kansas next weekend in a game that will go a long way in clearingup the National Title picture. HYPEMETER 3 4 The student section got the memo about the Maize Out, but the w rest of the Big House seemed a bit too red. The pre-game atmo- sphere was electric, and most of the students got to their seats Big Houses well before the game started. Still, it got alittle quiet in the fourth quarter, even if there was nothing worth getting excited about from the Wolverines play on the field. Oh yeah, and there was the O-H-1-O cheer that made it all the way around Michigan Stadium. PSSOCIATED . P O Upsets continue to pile up within the top 5, with No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Oklahoma the most recent casualties. New No. 2 Kansas now controls its own destiny and should reach the National Championship game if it stays perfect in the regular season. TEAM LAST WEEK THIS WEEK 1. S.OHIO STATE: All appeared to belost afterthe Buckeyes lost toIllinois a week ago. Now, after a convincing win here in Ann Arbor, Ohio State has ensured itself a berth inthe RoselBowl - which it hasn't been to since 1997. I Staff Picks recap: Well, it looks like the natural order of things has been restored - almost. Scott Bell didn't capture the win, but he finished just a game back from Kevin Wright. Meanwhile, Jack Herman returned to his comfy position as the cellar dwellar of the writers. Because he equaled the guest picker, Herman still is a game ahead of the guests in the race for last place. It'll be a close one with one week remaining on the schedule. Even though Herman was the lone writer to finish below.500, no one picked a best bet correctly. Pretty horrible. Unfortunately, we'll have to wish Engineering sophomore Stephen Dzul good luck as his five minutes of fame are over. Sorry we couldn't get an actual headshot in the paper. The photo staff lost it, so we went with the silouttee picture. As always, e-mail the football beat at footballbeat07@umich.edu to get in the pool of potential participants. STAFF PICKS Writer takes the best record of the week, and the guest is gone. Her- man is still a disgrace. As always, the picks are against the spread.
