4 2A - Thursday, October 25, 2007 Mayhem in Markley According to legend, Mary Mar- kley Residence Hall residents may have more to fear this Halloween than finding the perfect costume or being able to walk back from a party without assistance. Over the past 30 years, the Mass Markley Murder urban legend has gone through many different trans- formations since originating in the summer of 1983. It was then when Jeanne Dixon, a psychic famous for her prediction of President John F. Kennedy's death, wrote an article in the National Enquirer predicting the murders of 55 people on Halloween night, according to legend reported in The Michigan Daily. Dixon went on to say the murders would occur in a Big Ten University building in a shape of a letter, accord- ing to the Daily article. However, who made the prediction, as well as which magazine it appeared in, are still debated. Mary Markley Hall, being H- shaped as well as in close proximity to Forest Hills Cemetery, seemed like a perfect fit. The legend peaked in popular- ity during the early eighties and late nineties. Similar versions of the may- hem have circulated on the campuses of Michigan State University, Univer- sity of Wisconsin, University of Indi- ana and Kent State University. The story behind the urban legend has changed over the years. Many stu- dents at the University during the late nineties told the Daily they believed. that a psychic on the Oprah Show, not Dixon, predicted this catastrophe. How were these murders supposed to be carried out? Students had heard different varia- tions ofhow this atrocity might occur. These variations are as diverse as mass bombings to the killers dressing up as nursery rhyme character Little Bo Peep and going on murderous ram- pages through the dorm, according to Daily archives. In 1983, Daily staffers searching the dorm on Halloween night for signs of truth to the prediction found a sign-up list with 53 slots available on a student's door. The note read, "Don't want to study for midterms? Pick a low number and die early." While the urban legend has not been as prominent on campus the past few years, it certainly caused a stir during its prime in the early eighties and late nineties. Some students even left Markley on Halloween night, not wanting to take any chances. The Daily quoted one student who said she was planning on sleeping over in a friend's dorm room. This year, however, the urban leg- end has begun to show signs of old age. The vast majority of Markley residents said they had never heard it. A few long-time Markley staff mem- bers remembered the heyday of the legend, butthey declined to comment for this article.
