'navigating

> Getting around campus during the first week of classes can
be a hassle.
Let's be honest: Navigating alien territory is tough. But throw in unreliable busses,
out-of-conrol rollerbladers and inch-thick black ice, and it gets even tougher. Now factor
in professors who will make a chorus out of your late arrival. The Daily recognizes your
plight and has come up with a guide that'll help you plan your route accordingly before
you get the hang of things. The clocks reflect walking time estimates as recorded by two
relatively in-shape Daily staffers, and the extra text includes a few words from the wise
on what to watch out for on the walk to class. God speed.

There's a popular facebook group
at the University titled "Don't Take
the Bus from Bursley to Pierpont You
Lazy Bastards."
Don't be a lazy bastard. A one-
minute bus ride to Pierpont sounds
favorable to a seven-minute walk,
but it's not worth the ride. You
might have to brave winter tempera-
tures and climb the steep hill along
Bonisteel, but at least you'll burn a
few calories in the process. Besides,
a walk gives you the opportunity to
view the natural beauty of North
Campus.

flyering in the Diag
when you are going to work out,
probably the only thing that you're
thinking about is how much you don't
want to do it. The last thing you want
is a confrontation with someone from
a student organization and a little
piece of paper to throw away before
you get on the devil of a treadmill.
Going through the Diag means that
you're fair game and that you're going
to avoid waking eye contact at all
costs. Be ready.

So if you are walking to the UGLi
that means you're probably going to
plant yourself there for several hours
and have no fun. But at night, this par-
ticular walk is going to take you past
a lot of party houses and inevitably
a lot of people who are having much
more fun than you. It takes will power
to make it all the way to the library
without stopping for a brew.

If there is one thing you will learn
in your years at the University, it's
that pedestrians rule all. But for
some reason, the South University
Avenue/State Street intersection
with the blinking red light seems to
give drivers a warped mentality that
they don't have to yield for peds if
they don't want. It seems like there is
a "close call" there every 10 minutes.

It's not a bad walk, and you'll
learn the exact number of seconds
that it takes to get from your bed
to a desk in the back of your 8:30
a.m. class. The only obstacle that
can impede the well-timed trip is
the bridge. It gets extremely icy in
the winter, and if you're wise and
tread lightly, you will probably need
to add at least five minutes to your
walk. Or you can be the moron who
wipes out.

This walk is going to seem like it
takes much longer because of the
anticipation, but factoring in 23 min-
utes into your schedule is more than
sufficient. But if you're traveling to the
Big House within two hours of game
time, you're going to need to add
another six or seven minutes because
alumni are slow. It's a fact. They drive
slow and they walk slow because they
love the University, but tuck if they'll
ever get out of your way.

If you're stuck on North Campus, don't panic

for the fact that thefolks that live in the off- trip to Central lasts about 15 minutes, 20 during
