a 2A - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 FRIDAY: lere The Extremist Ben & Jerry's and Stucehi's make it work When Ben & Jerry's owner 1V1 Arthur took over the State Sti shop from " its previous owners May 2006, he often paid attentioi the flow of customers at the shop, placement, next door to Stucchi's cream, always seemed a bit stra: to him. Stucchi's had been an Ann Ar favorite since the late 1980s. So ol ously when Ben & Jerry's decidec move next door, it wasn't exactly ideal situation for the long-stand parlor. Asked what it's like to ben door to another ice cream store,c rent Stucchi's owner Kevin Ph( said it "kind of sucks." But believe it or not, both sci shop owners said their stores doing fine in terms of business. Ben & Jerry's, a franchise w shops in different 21 countries based in Vermont and ships pi everywhere in the continental U. But Stucchi's, a much sma CRIME NOTES $12,000 worth of recording equipment taken WHERE: 1200 Kipke Drive WHEN: Monday at about 11:0S WHAT: A female University employee reported her video recorder and its tripod as sto- len, the Department of Public Safety reported. Although it has already opened stores in the Michigan towns of Livonia, Milford, Dexter and Okemos as well as Wake Porest, NC. and Boston, the chain still has plans to expand further. The battle between the stores began in April of 2000, following a high demand for a Ben & Jerry's location to open in town. The origi- nal owners of Ben & Jerry's felt pressure to take the first location that opened up along State Street - which just happened to be next to Stucchi's. "It's my understanding that this location opened up and (the original owners of Ben & Jerry's) needed to make a decision, take it or leave it." Arthur said. "Ann Arbor real estate was very hard In come by." Though Ben & Jerry's has a big- ger name than Stucchi's, both shops have their regular patrons. Arthur said that in his experience, community loyalty has trumped the power of franchise. But he said he can understand the Ann Arborites twho seem to gravitate more toward the local Stucchi's. Phelps said it's common for visi- tors to choose a more familiar par- lor. "A lot of people come from out of town, orastates that have never heard of Stucchi's," Phelps said. But sometimes, Phelps said, peo- ple take their time and weigh their options. And because Stucchi's offers more flavors, it sometimes wins the battle. The shop owners would not share which one makes more money. - SARAH LYNNE THELEN Have a campus mystery rhat the Daily to solsvefor you? E-mail hchris@ umich.edu.
