That's what happened at the Big House. So much for a National Championship. 2007 Michigan roster Cornerback Johnny Sears no longer appears on the roster. Michigan coach Lloyd Carr would not elaborate on why the junior was dis- missed from the team. Freshman Donovan Warren has taken Sears's spot in the starting lineup, while sophomore Carlos Brown will assume much of the returning responsibilities that Sears once had. Other than that, there are no significant changes. O Heard about the eight-game winning streak Michigan has over Penn State? We detail each Wolverine win and the Nittany Lion reaction. Our expert beat writers - and one guest - try to pick this week's games around the nation. Also: A depth chart. Know anumber, but not a name? Check out the roster. SAY WHAT? It's not a super overwhelming place. Yes, it's large, and they're supposed to 7 have more people than us, but it's not overwhelming in the sense that it's not as loud as Beaver Stadium. Their fans aren't near as rowdy as our fans." - Penn State wide receiver Deon Butler on playing in MiChigan Stadium. Oregon (Sept. 8), L 7-39: Then the person that punched you in the face added insult to injury by stepping on your crotch and spitting in your ear. Then he walks out your front door with your girlfriend and steal your laptop. And your pillow. Notre Dame (Sept.15), W 38-0: The defeat oftthe Fighting Irish did two things for Michigan. First, it gave the Wolverines confidence heading into the Big Ten season. Second, the national press switched gears from Michigan's 0-2 start to harping on how bad Notre Dame is. Penn State (Sept. 22): Last time the Nittany Lions visited the Big House, they were 8-0 and contending for a spot in the National Championship game. Then Chad Henne found Mario Manningham on a slant in the end zone with one second remaining, rudely awakening Penn State from its dream season. at Northwestern (Sept. 29): Michigan's first road test will most likely resemble a quiz. The Wolverines haven't lost to Northwestern since 2000. Then again, Michigan wasn't supposed to lose to Appalachian State. Not that we'll still be bitter about that game late in September. Eastern Michigan (Oct. 6): Although it's not a bye week, Michigan will likely get some much-needed rest when it faces its Huron River rivals. The Wolverines are 7-0 against the Eagles all-time, including a 55-0 steamroller in 2005. Purdue (Oct.13): Purdue coach Joe Tiller sits on the hot seat after his team failed twice to capitalize on a Michigan-/Ohio State-less schedule. But his team returns nine defensive starters,. Too bad they made up one of the nation's worst run defenses last year. Somewhere, Mike Hart smiles. at Illinois (Oct. 20): Michigan has not lost a game at Memorial Stadium since 1983. But this year the game starts late, and you never know what can happen under the lights. Then again, Juice Williams is still the lilini quarterback. Minnesota(Oct. 27): Two years ago, the Gophers captured the Little Brown Jug for the first time since 1986 thanks to - surprise - a late-game, long run. First-year head coach Tim Brewster seemed excited about this game at Big Ten Media Day, but we'll see how he feels after Michigan extends Minnesota a not-so-kind welcome back tothe Big House. at Michigan State (Nov. 3): No longer will the Big Ten have John L. Smith to kick around. The oft-criticized coach was fired after a disappointing 4-8 season. New coach Mark Dantonio is known as a defensive guru, but have you seen what he has to work with? at Wisconsin (Nov.10): lfthe Wolverines had a choice of what time to play Wisconsin at Camp Randall, they probably wouldn't want a night game . Michigan got its wish because contrary to early beliefs, this game will not be under the lights. Just less time for the Wisconsin students to get drunk. Ohio State (Nov.17): With the lossoflTroy Smith and many ofthis merry men, Ohio State will be vulnerable when iflcomes to the Big House in November. To make matters worse, Michigan may be without place kicker BryanWright, who handled the kickoffs before leaving during the Notre Dame game. Carr won't say if Wright will suit up against Penn State. Edge: Penn State Intangibles There are too many storylines for this game to list all the moti- vation for each team. Michigan wants a shot at redeeming its sea- son with a Big Ten championship. Penn State hasn't beat the Wol- verines in eight years. And the Nittany Lions still remember the sting from the last second Michi- gan win in 2005. Don't forget the personal rivalry between Michi- gan quarterback Chad Henne and Morelli, either. In the end, the Wolverines are coming off a momentum-building win against Notre Dame and should be ready for the Nittany Lions.
