routine 38-10 thumping of Idaho wasn't too
impressive, but they're just getting started. This
could be the fastest and most talented Trojan squad
of Southern Cal coach Pete Carroll's tenure.

3. WEST VIRGINIA: The Mountaineers possibly
have one of the most explosive backfields in all of
college football with quarterback Pat White and
running back Steve Slaton. Blink, and you could miss
these guys. They're that fast.

8. LOUISVILLE: This is why Brian Brohm came back
even after losing ex-Cardinal coach Bobby Petrino to
the Atlanta Falcons. Louisville has plenty of cupcakes
on the schedule to get ready for the Nov. 8th showdown
agisnst West Virginia in Morgantown.

10. GEORGIA: The Bulldogs weren't supposed
to be good after all the talent they lost last season.
Bust after stuffing Oklahoma State 35-14. Georgia
coach Mark Richt might be a candidate for National
Coach of the Year if the Bulldogs keen this uo.

5. VIRGINIA TECH: The lokies tookthe field for the
first time since last spring's tragedy with heavy hearts.
No one can blame them for slacking in the opener. But
Virginia Tech will need to pick it up next week to get
by Maryland.

BEST OF THE BLOG
Readers of blog The Game (visit us at michigandaily.com) had their fair
share to say about the game. Here's the best of what we read:

AROUND THE NCAA
CALIFORNIA OUT RUNS VOLS IN A
REVENGE-FUELED PERFORMANCE: Led
by senior running back Justin Forsett's
156 yards on the ground the Golden
Bears blew bast the Volunteers 45-31,
erasing the memory of Cal's embar-
raasing 35-18 lone to Tenneauee last
season. With the game knotted at 14,
the Volunteers made a grave miatake:
actually punting to the super-shifty
DeSean Jackson, who took advantage
of the opportunity by promptly bust-
ing a 77-yard return for a touchdown.
The breath-taking return sparked the
Bears, who quickly pulled away from
the Volunteers.
TEXAS AVOIDS HUMILIATING DEFEAT
TO ARKANSAS STATE: With a comfort-
able 21-3 lead in the fourth quarter, the
Longhorns let their foot off the gas,
allowing the Indians to stage a furious
comeback. Tallying 10 unanswered
points, Arkansas State reached within
a touchdown of Texas. With less than
one minute remaining, Longhorn
senior Brandon Foster recovered an
onside kick to derail any chance at an
upset that Arkansas State had. Texas
quarterback Colt McCoy completed
22-of-33 attempts, racking up 223 yards
through the air, two touchdowns and
two interceptions.
HAWAII QUARTERBACK ADDS HIS
NAME TO LIST OF HEISMAN HOPE-
FULS: Senior Colt Brennan torched the
Northern Colorado secondary for 416
yards and six touchdowns. And that
was just in the first half. The Warriors
record-setting field general didn't play
down in the second half, as Hawaii
demolished Bears 63-6. Although many
consider Brennan's numbers to be a
product of the system instead of talent,
putting up those kind of statistics in
one half has turned heads around the
nation.

"What is wrong with you people? Why don't
you just admit that Appalachian was a really
good team and beat agood team? We are proud
of our Mountaineers!!!!!" - Bobby Barnes
"If Carr gets out of this without getting canned,
he's a frickin' magician and there is no way for
him to ever be fired." - Wilson
"App State was good, UM should still have won
by at least 2 touchdowns. I'm embarrassed,
disappointed and wondering how on earth will
the rest of September go...Will we win any-
thing?" - Dhrw
"No one is mentioning that ASU came with
2 back-to-back Div 1AA National Champion-
ships. I am sorry this embarrasses you but
maybe you should suck it up and realize that
a good team played a better game yesterday!
I have long followed Michigan Football and I
too felt ASU would probably be beat badly and
hoped that our fans kept things in perspective
and realized that we were not supposed to win
against Michigan @ the "Big House" or any-
where else. But to make fun of Appalachian
State only makes your loss seem bigger!" -
Tom Needham
"Michigan has had tons of embarrassing
defeats. It may the winningest program in col-
lege football history but it is also known for
having lost the most games it should' have
won. If you go back into the early 20th century
you'll find the Wolverines lost plenty of games
to crappy teams, many much worse than App.

State, which, let's not forget, is about to take
it's third straight national title. Of course you
don't have to go that far to find embarrassing
Wolverine defeats..." -Leo the Lion
"As it has been said, '(Michigan coach Lloyd)
Carr can't win the big games.' " - Leo A
Lindquist
"Has anyone else stopped to notice that we are
0-3 since Bo's passing?" - Jason
-
"I have watched U-M games for 60 yrs - and
back when they really had some lousy teams,
and 1 and my whole family graduate from U-M.
And I have been saying 'Our Coaches Do Not
Have To Be Michigan Men!' for a long time. I
think Carr should have been fired a long time
ago; we sure passed up some good, young,
aggressive coaches!" - Richard Wiltse
"Telling Michigan that Appalachian State will
prove themselves
$0.02...
Predicting an Appalachian State win over #5
Michigan:
$0.25 and a cup of coffee...
Payday for just showing up in Ann Arbor:
$400,000...
Seeingthelookoneverybody'sfacewhenAppa-
lachian State makes Michigan eat CROW:
Priceless...
There are some things money can't buy,
for everything else there's
MASTERCARD"
