"I don't know if they have pucks
like this in St. Louis, but it'd be nice
to have one."
- Michigan coach RED BERENSON on the puck
he kept as a memento from his 600th win
Friday night. St. Louis is the site of this year's
Frozen Four Tournament.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Billy Sauer
MICHIGAN
The sophomore netminder earned his first
shutout this season, Tuesday against Bowl-
ing Green. It was his first clean sheet in
over a year. While the weekend split wasn't
so happy, Sauer did what he could to keep
his team in the game. As Berenson says,
that's all you can ask for from your goalie.

DEFENSE
Too many pucks are still going in
Michigan's net. Sauer is doing his
part (mostly). We're still waiting
for the day the blue liners step
up and play to their talent level.

SPECIAL TEAMS
The penalty-kill units were strong
all weekend long, helping to keep
the Wolverines in the game. Unfor-
tunately, the power play floun-
dered in seven chances Saturday.

IN THE STANDS
It was nice of Jack Johnson Sr. to show some
love for his son's coach's 600th win on Friday.
During his usual second-intermission dance
routine, the elder Johnson stripped off his coat
to reveal an old-school Red Berenson ersey.
While they weren't treated to a win, Saturday night's
crowd was the largest to fill Yost this season. The 6,893
fans didn't have much to cheer about as the high-octane
Michigan offense ran out of gas. The previous high
attendance at Yost this season came on Nov. 4, when
6,887 fans attended a game against Michigan State.

still capable ofkeepingthe
Wolverines in the upper ech-
elon of college hockey.
To that Ireply: Who got
the Wolverines back into that
top tier?
It was Berenson, filling
Yost's rafterswithbanners
from two NCAA champi-
onships, nine Frozen Four
appearances, nine CCHA
regular-season titles and
seven CCHA Tournament
championships.
It's not a fluke that Michi-
gan is the winningest program
over the last 15 years, or that
a string of former Wolver-
ines like Brendan Morrison
and Marty Turco have made
names for themselves in the
NHL.
Why is Michigan a peren-
nial preseason pick to be one
of the top teams in the CCHA?
It all starts behind the bench.
Yes, the players that com-

pose the team definitely make
up a big part of it. But players
come and go, and Berenson
is the one that's always there,
drawingthem into the pro-
gram and grooming them
from their first practice to
their last.
"I've been lucky health-
wise, and even mentally,"
Berenson said last week.
"I'm still excited about our
team and our players and our
games."
It's obvious from the way
Berenson's face lights up when
he talks abouthis favorite
part of being a college hockey
coach: More than anything, he
loves helping players develop.
As long as he has that
enthusiasm, Berenson belongs
at the helm of Michigan
hockey. Because when he has
that, No.700 doesn't seem too
far away.
Colvin hopes she can skate
as well as Red Berenson when
she turns 67. She can be reached
at ambermcoriumich.edu.

BEN SIMON/Daily

Sophomore goalie Billy Sauer had a .954 save percentage in last week's three games.

WILDCATS
From page 1B
"After thatturnover
in the neutral zone, I
think it was 3-on-3,
and one of our guys
just went tothe wrong
player," Hunwick said.
"I think we double
covered one player and
let (Santorelli) walk in
alone. When you leave
a guy like that open to
shoot, he showed you
what he can do with

the puck."
Michigan contin-
ued to struggle offen-
sively, but shored up
defensively after San-
torelli's second goal.
In the Wolverines'
net, goaltender Billy
Sauer played well for
the third consecutive
game, saving 28 of the
30 shots he faced.
Sauer had strug-
gled December, shak-
en by an eight-goal
onslaught in Minne-
apolis on Nov. 25. But
in three games this
week, Sauer stopped
83 of the 87 shots he
faced.
"Billy gave us a

chance," Berenson
said. "That's all you
can ask from your
goalie - that he not
bury you and that he
give you a chance, and
that's what Billy did
tonight. Billy Sauer
kept us in the game."
Unfortunately for
the Wolverines, it
wasn't enough. Michi-
gan couldn't generate
offense until just 6.5
seconds remained in
the game.
Michigan won a
faceoff to Zaniboni's
right, and the puck
found its way to Cogli-
ano, who slapped it in
from the high slot.

While the goal pre-
vented the Wolverines
from being shut out at
home for the first time
in almost four years, it
did little to erase the
sour taste of North-
ern Michigan's domi-
nance.
"One goal with six
seconds left in the
third period is way
too little, too late,"
Hunwick said. "We
just didn't play well
tonight. Whether we
scored or not doesn't
change the way we
played. We just didn't
come out tonight and
play the way that we
are capable of."
