In Dearborn and Hamtramck, Arab American voters struggled to find interpreters and bilingual infor- mation and poll workers refused to help, the study says. Asian Ameri- can voters also reported a lack of adequately translated materials. The study says about 57 percent of Arab and Asian American voters were required to show indentifica- tion in order to vote, even though the law says that only first-time vot- ers need to show ID. Magpantay said Asian-language voting instructions are often hung upside down or not displayed at all. Language problems are a com- plex topic, Political Science Prof. Ann Chih Lin said. She said natu- ralized immigrants must pass an English test to become U.S. citi- zens, meaning all eligible voters can speak and understand English. Lin said that despite English pro- ficiency, the complex language in polling instructions and the politi- cal jargon of referendums can be confusing for non-native speakers. She also said that while election officials often cater to Hispanic vot- ers, they struggle to cater to Asian voters because they are a much less-recognized minority. Another problem is the number of different dialects of Asian lan- guages, Magpantay said. He said that election workers have mis- takenly given Mandarin Chinese translations of ballots to voters who only speak Cantonese, for example. AMAKER From page 1 that. Amaker's wife, Stephanie Pin- der-Amaker, is expected to be part of the Harvard faculty as well, according to the Globe. Pinder- Amaker is the associate dean of students at the University. Pinder-Amaker declined a request for an interview with The Michigan Daily after her husband was fired last month. Harvard does not have a black coach in any of its 32 sports, and the Globe reports that Harvard Athletic Director Bob Scalise was interested in adding diversity to the athletic department. . For Tuesday, April 10, 2007 ARIES (March 21to April 19) Power struggles with others are likely, especially about ideologies or opinions about religion and politics. Try to avoid these disputes, because they just make everyone miserable. "TAURUS (April 20to May 20) You're taking an intense stance on something. You're digging in your heels today to hold your ground. Perhaps this is good; perhaps this is foolish? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Avoid arguments with groups or acquaintances. You might win an argu- ment and lose a friend. Ask yourself if this is really something worth fighting for. CANCER (June 21to July 22) Disputes with bosses, parents and VIPs could be nasty. Definitely avoid this if you can. It's just a big power struggle, and there's a good chance you'll lose. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You're very passionate about some kind of belief (religious or ideological) today. Resist the urge to make others agree with you and your way of seeing things. It's no big deal - not really. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You might be worried about someone taking advantage of you or something you own. Perhaps your values don't mesh with the values of others. Just live and let live. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Ego battles with partners and close friends are likely. Think of what your true objective is. Don't you want to just get along and be happy? SCORPIO (Oct. 23 toNov. 21) You might be fixated on something having to do with small pets or some- thing to do with your health today. Achieve the results you want, but don't be pushy. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) This is a classic day for lovers' quar- rels and high drama between parents and children. Try not to even go there! Remain mellow and loving. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Don't get your belly in a rash with fanily members today. Instead, make improvements and repairs at home, espe- cially to bathrooms and plumbing. Take out the garbage. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20to Feb. 18) You have a one-track mind today. You're practically obsessed with some- thing. Or maybe you just can't get the song "I Shot the Sheriff' out of your mind. PISCES (Feb. 19to March 20) You're obsessed about something financially, or perhaps even a personal possession you own. If it's not about your health or the health of your loved ones, lighten up. It's just stuff. YOU BORN TODAY You're coura- geous and daring. Because you're com- fortable in your own skin, you do your job and see it through to the end. You're very independent and must find some- thing you love to do. Some of you work in groups, some of you work alone - but all of you are warriors. Expect a major change this year, as significant as around 1990. Birthdate of: Steven Seagal, actor; Michael Pitt, actor; Mandy Moore, actress/singer. 0 2007 King Features Syndicate.
