Others call it five large pieces of black metal. Whether or not you under- stand "Daedalus," the sculpture that used to stand outside the entrance of the University of Michigan Museum of Art, it's the largest piece of artwork in the University's collection. Designed by artist Charles Ginnever, the wing-shapedsculp- ture is made of five metal paral- lelograms. It stands about 11 feet tall at its highest point. "The effect is of a serenity that is at odds with its size," the University's public art registry says. For decades, it was impossible to miss "Daedalus" while walk- ing by the corner of South Uni- versity Avenue and State Street. The piece, which is built of dura- ble Cor-Ten steel, stood in front of the building's entrance until last fall, when it was moved for the length of the museum's cur- rent renovation project. The five pieces of metal that make up "Daedalus" were cut apart and are now tucked away in a warehouse, said Wayne Kil- bourn, a security officer for the UMMA. "They took it apart with a blowtorch and moved it into storage," Kilbourn said. Kilbourn said he was unable to disclose the current location of the piece, because doingso might threaten its security. Although it may appear to be simple, "Daedalus" has a unique appearance from all sides.. One reason it was originally placed on the museum's front lawn is that the location allowed visitors to walk around the piece and see it from different angles, according to the UMMA web- site. The name of sculpture refers to the Greek hero Daedalus, who in Greek mythology escaped from King Minos's prison on the island of Crete by building wings out of wax. His name means "artificer" - making the sculpture a suitable frontispiece for the University's art museum. "Daedalus" was purchased for an undisclosed price using pri- vate funds from UMMA support- ers and a grant from the National Education Association. The artwork was bought in honor of the UMMA's 30th aini- versary in 1977, two years after the piece was designed, accord- ing to the public art registry. When construction is finished in 2008, the piece is slated to be moved to the south side of the UMMA, according to the Univer- sity's public art registry.
