LSAT
From page 1
Tamayo, who started to prepare for
0 the LSAT in February, said she isn't
really worried about the changes to
the writing section.
McCloskey said the writing sec-
tion isn't that important because
it isn't graded - meaning a poor
showing on the section probably
won't hurt your chances at getting
into the law school of your dreams.
It's there so admissions officers will
be able to see a writing sample that
represents an applicant's skills bet-
ter than a prepared essay, she said.
Perez-Tamayo said she's wor-
ried about the changes to the
Reading Comprehension section,
though.
There will be a new comparative
reading section, which requires stu-
dents to analyze two short passages.
"It will be hard, not having pre-
vious exams to study from," Perez-
Tamayo said.

FUNDING
From page 1
research funding dollars that come
from sources outside Michigan and
consequently bring more to the
state economy.
"That's what we're asking for
- for the state to have an accu-
rate measure of what we're giving
back," Cunningham said.
She said the University isn't try-
ing to cut itself a bigger slice of the
state appropriations pie.
"We would never propose any-
thing that would work against the
(University's) Flint and Dearborn
campuses," she said. "It's not about
securing more money for us at the
expense of other universities."
The coalition members are
concerned, though, that creat-
ing a separate pot for the funding
of research universities would
increase the financial gap between
schools.
"Ultimately, it might force the

other 12 universities to curtail cer-
tain parts of what they consider
their missions," Roland said.
She said the three research
schools shouldn't be set apart as
the main higher education institu-
tions that benefit the state.
"When you're talking about the
engine that runs the state's econo-
my, that is an educated work force
- and that educated workforce is
coming out of the other 12 universi-
ties," Roland said.
The University of Michigan at
Flint, the University of Michigan
at Dearborn and Northern Michi-
gan University are the only public
universities in the state besides the
three research universities that
haven't joined the coalition.
Northern Michigan spokeswom-
an Cindy Paavola said that univer-
sity's president has decided not
to take a position on the coalition
until actual legislation that would
separate the appropriations system
is complete.

Houdini kin want body exhumed

NEW YORK (AP) - For all
his death-defying stunts, Harry
Houdini couldn't escape the Grim
Reaper: He died on Halloween
1926, apparently from a punch
to the stomach that ruptured his
appendix. -
But rumors that he was mur-
dered have persisted for decades.
Eighty-one years after Houdini's
death in Detroit, his great-neph-
ew wants the escape artist's body
exhumed to determine if enemies
poisoned him for debunking their
bogus claims of contact with the
dead.
"It needs to be looked at,"
George Hardeen told The Asso-
ciated Press. "His death shocked
the entire nation, if not the world.
Now, maybe it's time to take a sec-
ond look."
Houdini's family scheduled a
news conference for Friday to give

details on the plans. Prominent
New York lawyer Joseph Tacopina
is helping clear any legal hurdles to
the exhumation.
A team of top forensic investi-
gators would conduct new tests
on Houdini's body, said Hardeen,
whose grandfather was Houdini's
brother.
The circumstances surround-
ing Houdini's sudden death are as
murky as the rivers where he often
escaped from chains, locks and
wooden boxes.
The generally accepted version
was that Houdini, 52, suffered a
ruptured appendix from a punch in
the stomach, leading to a fatal case
of peritonitis.
However, no autopsy was per-
formed.
When the death certificate was
filed on Nov. 20, 1926, Houdini's
body - brought by train from

Detroit to Manhattan -had already
been buried in Queens, along with
any evidence of a possible death
plot.
Within days, a newspaper head-
line wondered, "Was Houdini Mur-
dered?"
A 2006 biography, "The Secret
Life of Houdini," raised the issue
again and convinced some that he
might have been poisoned, includ-
ing George Hardeen, who lives in
Arizona and is the chief spokes-
man for the president of the Navajo
Nation.
The likeliest murder suspects
were members of a group known
as the Spiritualists.
The magician devoted large
portions of his stage show to
exposing the group's fraudulent
seances. The movement's devotees
included Sherlock Holmes author
Arthur Conan Doyle.
