The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com CANDIDATE From page IA began investigating the case in April. The case is still open, according to DPS spokeswoman Diane Brown. Because the incident is still under investigation, Brown said that she could neither confirm nor deny the identity of the sus- pect. Brown said the alleged crime is "fraudulent access to computers,sys- tems, or networks to knowingly dis- rupt a computer network or system." Joe Golden, who was the MPP website administrator at the time of the attack, provided documents showing a 2,000-percent increase in the amount of traffic per individ- ual visitor on the night of the elec- tion compared to the day before. Seventy-seven percent of the traffic for the month was the downloading of a single file on the website more than 200,000 times. After the incident, Golden noti- fied the University's Information Technology Security Services, which conducted an investigation of its own. It was this investigation that determined that Vuljaj was involved in the attack, Fogel said. According to MSA minutes, on Dec. 5, 2006, Vuljaj was appointed vice chair of the MSA Community Service Commission. Commission chairs are nomi- nated by MSA representatives and are not required to be representa- tives themselves. Independent MSA Rep. Kenneth Baker dismissed concerns about Vuljaj's MSA involvement. "What we saw in the elections (was that) Tony made a mistake," he said. "But you'll not find any- body in MSA who hasn't made a mistake in the past. Nowhe's doing a great job. I don't have a problem with it." The community service com- mission, as Vuljaj describes it on his campaign website, funds "vari- ous student groups on campus that participate in community service activities." The commission is one of MSA's two funding bodies, and it receives its funding from a $1 fee in each student's tuition. MSA President Nicole Stallings, who ran on the S4M ticket last year, and MAP presidential candidate Zack Yost declined to comment for this article. YOST From page lA "I love campaign season," Yost said. "It's really awesome to see people so into it and so passion- ate, It kind of gets you. I'm getting choked up a little bit." Yost never attributes plans or ideas strictly to himself, instead he always says "we," referring to him- self and vice-presidential candidate Mohammad Dar. He described MAP - which he co-founded last September in the tradition of the election power- house Students 4 Michigan Party - as a non-partisan political party. He's steadfast in maintaining that broad appeal. "That's how we might differ, at least in part, from the Defend Affir- mative Action Party," Yost said. "We as a party do not bring political ideology to student government." While political activism on cam- pus is important, some issues, like the war in Iraq, extend outside stu- dents' reach, Yost said. He said stu- dents shouldn't try to affect politics beyond the local or state level. "We're talking about an inter- national war," Yost said. "Keeping your eye on the proper priorities is something worth doing." One of the goals on Yost's list of goals is to improve communication among members of the nearly two dozen committees that make up MSA. Yost said he wants to make stu- dents more aware of the progress MSA makes. "Information doesn't flow as freely as it should," he said. Monday, March 19, 2007 - 7A Yost's MSA peers were univer- sally supportive. Nicole Stallings, the current MSA president, saidshe has worked closely with Yost on many proj- ects throughout the last year. She said he'd make a great president of MSA. "The thing that stands out about Zack is that he really connects with the other people in the assembly," she said. Yost, who is Jewish, and Dar, an active member of the Muslim Stu- dents' Association, hope to ease religious tensions among students, Yost said. "There is a lot of work to be done between Jews and Muslims on this campus," Yost said. "We think that there is certainly a very unique opportunity for the two of us for us to do something productive." the michigan daily 6 BDRM. HSE. at 149 Hill St. avail. EXTRA for fall leasing.
