SOAP OPERA

insurance agency to confirm his
address.
"What is this about, did I win?"
Gale asked.
They didn't tell him, but Gale
Was notified a few weeks later that
he was one of 10 finalists moving on
to he contest semifinals.
4"Night Call" was then posted
on SOAPnet.com with nine other
semifinalists. Gale put his friends
and family to work voting for his
film to boost it above the others in
the online contest.
"We made a Facebook group and
we had like 200 members, and we
were calling everyone we knew,"
Gale said.
Votes came in from around the
world - including from Wales and
Spain, Gale said. The publicity push

worked and Gale's film advanced to
the finals.
As one of five finalists, Gales
must create another five-minute
soap opera. It will be broadcasted
on SOAPnet in April.
SOAPnet is sending camera
crews to Ann Arbor at the end of
March to document the filming
of Gale's final contest entry for a
behind-the-scenes featurette.
While "Night Calls" was based
on a short story by J.D. Salinger,
Gale's next short is an original
work set inside the offices of a tab-
loid newspaper.
"I'm very confident in our idea,"
Gale said. "I love our script - we
worked really hard on it. I think it's
a super-tight five minutes."
If Gale wins, he plans on taking
his production partners with him
to Los Angeles for development
meetings with SOAPnet executives.

He is making the films with School
of Music junior Nick Lang, LSA
sophomore Matt Lang and School
of Music senior Chris Allen.
"We always had a pact for years
that whoever made it first would
bring the rest along," Gale said.
"We're all together on this one."
Before joining the contest, Gale
never watched soap operas. Nowhe
sometimes watches them to learn
more about the genre.
Gale said he hopes to parlay his
soap success into an animation
career at Disney, SOAPnet's parent
company.
Gale has the next month to work
on his final contest entry, and hope
all goes as planned.
He said his finals in December
didn't go well. But it doesn't really
matter, he said. Gale hopes to be
bound for Hollywood soon, where
those finalswillbe a distant memory.

VISAS
From page 1A
month that 93 out of 100 American
Fulbright applicants had their visas
either rejected or delayed, prevent-
ing them from getting to India in
time for their study.
The rise of the UnitedProgressive
Alliance party in national elections
two years ago could be responsible
forthevisadenials and delays. Many
in the Indian press have suggested
that the party could be trying to
crack down on research that could
damage India's reputation.
"It could be the matter of one dif-
ficult bureaucrat," Davis said. "Visa
authorization is so difficult to get
because they're worried that you'll
do research that would put India in
a bad light."
Davis reapplied for a visa in late
November with a new research

proposal - language socialization
in Tirunelveli. She isstill waiting to
hear from the Indian government.
She also applied for a visa to Sri
Lanka to study language socializa-
tion in Colombo schools. The Sri
Lankan government has already
given her permission to conduct
research in the country. She plans
to study there government rejects
her visa request again.
"Now I have this new project,"
Davis said. "I have no idea which
project I'll end up doing. It's a dif-
ficult decision because they're both
promising projects."
India is not the only country
that rejects research visas based on
topic, though.
Rackham student Kevin Jones
earned a Fulbright scholarship to
Egypt to study the Muslim Brother-
hood, an opposition party to Hosni
Mubarak's regime. He said he

Monday, March 12, 2007 - 7A
thinks he was rejected because his
topic was politically sensitive.
Jones realized soon after apply-
ing for the visa that his topic would
likely be rejected.
"I was waiting and anticipating
the denial so Icould file the appeal,"
Jones said.
Jones reapplied, asking the sec-
ond time for permission to study
modern Islamic history. He expect-
ed the Egyptian government to
accept his proposal because the
topic was more general, but he was
rejected again.
He said he thinks the Egyptian
government might have blacklisted
him after his first visa application.
Jones said he isn't worried about
losing the chance to pursue his Ful-
bright scholarship.
"I'm sure I'll have the chance to
do it again," he said. "I have some
time here."

ARIES
(March 21 to April 19)
Your impulsive feelings are very
strong today. You have an urge building
up within you to do something different.
You want adventure, and you want it
now!
TAURUS
(April 20 to May 20)
You're not casual about money issues
today. (Oh, no.) You might even jeal-
ously guard whatever you own. You feel
quite territorial about your share of
something.
GEMINI
(May 21to June 20)
Be careful during discussions with
partners and close friends today. Your
intensity about something could blow
someone else out of the water. Make
your point, but don't jump up and down
screaming.
CANCER
(June 21to July 22)
You have some good ideas to intro-
duce to the workplace today. Your move
for reform could include getting rid of
dead weight and what is no longer really
needed.
LEO
(July 23to Aug. 22)
Parents should lighten tip with kids
today. Take it easy. The same goes for
romantic relationships: Don't get your
belly in a rash about anything.
VIRGO
(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)
Be gentle with family discussions and
domestic matters today, especially
exchanges with parents. People feel they
"know what's good for you" today.
(Ouch.)
LIBRA
(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)
You're tempted to do anything to win
an argument today. Don't take the bait.
Although you're very persuasive right
now, why act like a steamrollerawith oth-

ers?
SCORPIO
(Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)
You're very intent about financial
matters today. You won't overlook a
thing. That's why this is a good day for
money deals and major purchases.
SAGITTARIUS
(Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)
You feel very intensely about some-
thing today. Even though you like to
appear breezy and casual about life,
today something really hooks you. (Easy
does it.)
CAPRICORN
(Oe. 2210o Jan. 19)
This is a good day to research any-
thing. If you're looking for something,
you will find it. You're relentless about
going after answers and solutions.
AQUARIUS
(Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)
A friend might try to convince you of
something, or vice versa, today. You
might want to ask yourself if it's really
that important. (At the end of the game,
the King and the Pawn go back in the
same box.)
PISCES
(Feb. 19to March 20)
Be careful today during discussions
with VIPs (including the police).
Feelings might run high. This is not a
good day to try to prove something to
someone.
YOU BORN TODAY Many of you
are multitalented. You're courageous
about doing your own thing. In fact, you
might be considered to be a bit over-the-
top. You leap in where others fear to
tread, because living dangerously has an
attraction for you. The year ahead prom-
ises wonderful opportunities for intimate
relationships and many social, fun-
loving occasions. Enjoy yourself in
2007!
