EXOSKELETON
From page 1
electrodes attached to the patient's
ankle that detect nervous system
activity. The prosthesis senses
weak movements and amplifies
them through an air-powered
pneumatic muscle.
Ferris and Gordon have tested
the device on healthy volunteers.
After the prosthesis was placed on
their ankles, volunteers gauged the
comfort of the device while the sci-
entists tested how effectively the
prosthesis detected and assisted in
muscle contraction.
Although healthy volunteers had
trouble getting used to the prosthe-
sis at first, Gordon said they were
able to walk normally after about
half an hour with the device on
ABRAM
From page 1
pended license, on top of the cost of
Abram's speeding ticket.
Abram did not return calls to
his cell phone last night. Calls to
Abram's parents' house in Pontiac
also went unreturned.
Abram is a fifth-year senior on
the men's basketball team. This is
his third straight year as team cap-
tain. He's the first player in program
history to have that distinction.
Abram was at the Wolverines'
practice Monday afternoon.
On the court, he's having the
worst season of his career, averag-
ing just 9.3 points per game. He's
also shooting career-low percent-
ages from the field (44.4 percent)
and 3-point range (30 percent).

their ankles.
Now Ferris is testing how well
the exoskeleton works for patients
with spinal cord injuries. The tech-
nology is not meant as a permanent
fix, though. Ferris said it serves as
a training device that can amplify
muscle movement to help patients
regain their coordination.
It's possible that exercise using
the exoskeleton could undo nerve
damage, but Ferris would not say
whether the machine has any
impact on nervous system activity
before the researchers publish their
data.
Ferris said that although some
spinal rehabilitation centers
already use robotic prostheses to
rehabilitate patients, most centers
send patients home with support
braces or wheel chairs. But most

rehabilitation centers that use
robotics control the devices with
computers instead of the patient's
own nerve impulses.
Using the patient's own nerve
impulses to control the prosthesis
gives the nervous system the feed-
back it needs to regain muscle coor-
dination, Ferris said.
He called the device a safe and
effective way to treat spinal cord
patients.
Despite his high hopes, Ferris
said there won't be just one solution
for the estimated 250,000 Ameri-
cans currently suffering from spi-
nal cord injuries.
He said he hopes his work will be a
major step forward for the study and
treatment of spinal cord injuries.
"We are really at the tip of the
iceberg," Gordon said.

Mardi Gras business brisk

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The
final weekend leading up to Mardi
Gras has been a boon for hotels,
restaurants and bars, with business
generally brisker than last year,
the first Carnival since Hurricane
Katrina devastated the city.
"The weekend was surprisingly
busy," said Earl Bernhardt, co-
owner of two bars and a blues club
in the French Quarter. "The crowd
is bigger and they're spending a lot
of money."
Merchants, hotel operators and
others felt the crowd would exceed
the 700,000 the New Orleans Con-
vention and Visitors Bureau said
visited the city during the same

time period last year.
"It was an excellent weekend,"
said Michael Valentino, managing
partner of three French Quarter
hotels.
He said, "There is clearly more
demand this year. It's feeling more
like our normal Mardi Gras pres-
sure."
More than 95 percent of the
city's total available rooms were
reserved for Mardi Gras weekend,
said Fred Sawyers, president of
the Greater New Orleans Hotel &
Lodging Association and general
manager of the New Orleans Hil-
ton.
That's up from 92 percent occu-

pancy for the first weekend of Car-
nival, Feb. 10-11, he said.
The city was eager to stage its
annual pre-Lenten celebration last
year to show tourists that they
could return.
The first Carnival since Hur-
ricane Katrina was scaled down
- 68 daily flights into the city, 42
parades rolled and 600 restaurants
open, according to the New Orleans
Tourism Marketing Corporation.
Of the 20,000 hotel rooms habit-
able last year, only 13,000 were
available to visitors. The rest were
taken by the Federal Emergency
Management Agency, volunteers
and contractors.
