She stressed that the men will represent both positive and nega- tive relationships in the women's lives. At first, though, Millan consid- ered having a man deliver one of the monologues. Cast members were first approached with the idea two to three weeks into rehearsal in Janu- ary. Millan said reaction was mixed. About four weeks later, Millan and assistant director Nicole Avant told the cast they had decided to only use men as extras in the pro- duction. The cast membernsaid Millanand Avant told the cast it was a directo- rial decision. "It was ahuge shiftinthe amount of male involvement.in the onstage production," the cast member said. The V-Day College Campaign contacted Millan in January after rehearsals had begun about the inclusion of men in the play. But Millan said she and Avant had already decided not to cast a man in a monologue. Millan said she hadn't discussed the idea with the national organi- zation before that point. Millan said she ultimately chose to not cast a man in the production because of the cast's feedback, not the threat that the national organi- zation would pull the play. She said that was a factor in her decision, though. Millan said she did not want to risk having the play - a fundrais- er for SAFEHouse, an Ann Arbor women's shelter - canceled. "The last thing I want to do is cheapen my production or cheapen the women," Millan said. PARKING From page 1 increase of $3 per year. The cost of permits for graduate students will go up by $6 per year. Brown said the University isn't planning on building more park- ing for students, despite the rate increase. She said students should use public transportation - Ann Arbor Transportation Authority or University buses - to get around campus. "Students shouldn't need to have a vehicle," she said. "There are enough means of mass transit or alternative transportation pro- grams to get them around campus and to other entertainment activi- ties." She said the University doesn't have enough space to provide addi- tional parking space to students. Friday, February 16, 2007 - 7 Hank Baier, associate vice presi- dent for facilities and operations, said parking has long been a prob- lem at the University. "It's been like that for a long time," he said. "If students were in cars, it would be a mess." He said more parking for stu dents would increase road conges- tion and hurt the environment. Brown said the revenue from parking permits is one of the main sources of funding for the con- struction and maintenance of park- ing structures. She said the University will con- tinue encouraging students to use alternative forms of transportation rather than bring their own cars to campus. "We need to keep analyzing and tweaking so we are meeting needs of students through transportation and not through parking," she said. "After I saw the place, I considered it my obliga- tion to show (others) what I had seen." Last summer, she went back. She raised money from family and friends to donate chickens and built coops in three areas in Tan- zania. Gannes said the chickens are a gift has kept on giving since she left Africa.
