The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com SOCIETY From page IA group were to be named Union of the M, it would also be known as the Ms. The group is reputed to have had a large hand in the construction of the Michigan Union. "The 'union' serves multiple purposes as a word that links us, and of course is also a physi- cal symbol as the building and place on campus where diverse student leaders come together for campus," the e-mail said. Alternatives are the Ms, M Society, Order of the M and the M Circle, the e-mail said. Maestus is a Latin word for passionate fire, according to the e-mail. "Using a Latin word can also augment the theme on our University seal: Artes, Scientia, Veritas (art, science, truth)," the e-mail said. Listed alternatives are M fire, Blue Flame and Ring of Fire. The Order of the Angell is at least partly a nod to James B. Angell - the University's president from 1871 to 1909, a founder of the society and the namesake of Angell Hall. It's also a nod to the society's past. "The 'order' symbolizes how we have evolved over time, using different names, but truly being a part of one long-lasting legacy," the e-mail said. Listed alternatives to this option are The Angell Society, the Angells and The Order. Munus means service, duty or gift in Greek and Latin. "It emphasizes the duty that we have to cam- pus to serve as leaders while also acknowledg- ing the gift or honor that is bestowed upon each person who is tapped into the organization," the e-mail said. the michigan daily Muneris, a Latin word with a similar meaning to Munus, is suggested as an alternative. The e-mail identifies the group's guidelines in picking a new name. The first is that it should be mysterious. "The name/theme should be somewhat enig- matic in order to capture people's attention and peak their curiosity about the group in a positive way," the e-mail said. The second criterion is that the name provide a connection to the past but allow the group to "easily expand upon a central idea that will create new layered and meaningful traditions." The third is that it let the group "continue to incorporate our commitment to (both the past and future of) Michigan." The fourth is that emphasize the group's role of campus leadership. The final criterion is that it be distinct enough from previous monikers. "(It should not) divert future years from their goals to Fight Like Hell," the e-mail said. But the e-mail goes on to say that the name "must respect and honor the path that brought us here." The society's past has been fraught with con- troversy. Some on campus view the group as synonymous with racism, sexism and elitism. However, it has undergone significant change as of late, including releasing the names of its latest two classes of members, the "prides" of 2006 and 2007. It still has not made public its numerous "Hon- orary Angells," at least some of who are Univer- sity administrators and faculty. The society began admitting women in 2000 and has recently started tapping a more diverse membership, which can be seen in members' political viewpoints, races and sexual orienta- tions. FORUM From page IA hike and price gouging. "It comes as no surprise that this ordinance has raised rates," said Tom Gruber, a co-owner of Gruber Manage- ment, an Ann Arbor landlord. "When you spread out the market, that's how you get your rents." Ehn agreed, saying that the princi- ple of supply and demand has justified raising rents because of the December surge of potential renters. Council member Leigh Greden (D-Ward 3) posited another explana- tion for the rent increases this year. He suggested that abnormally large fresh- man classes in 2004 and 2005 caused an increase in sophomores and juniors this year looking for off-campus housing. Students and landlords alike have tried to circumvent the new regula- tions. Several tenant's association mem- bers and landlords said they have heard rumors of both students and landlords cheating on leasing agreements by signing tenants before December. Most of the cheating stories con- cerned waiver fees. The ordinance has loophole that allowes landlords and prospective tenants to sign leases early if the current tenants sign a waiver. Ehn said some renters charged $100 fees in exchange for signing the waiver. Fred Gruber, co-owner of Gru- ber Management, cited a more costly incident. He said he heard reports that some renters had tried to charge $600 to several groups of prospective ten- ants for their waiver. Gruber said his firm wasn't involved with the transac- tion, so he signed the house to the first group of tenants who approached him after the waiver was submitted. Student representatives at the meet- ing said they had only heard a few sto- ries of students exploiting the waiver loophole. "I have heard very few stories of cheating, but that's not the whole com- munity," said Matt Stoker, a member of the Michigan Student Assembly's External Relations Committee. Ehn said students who followed the rules were caught in a December sign- ing rush. "We predicted that there would be a frenzy and there was," she said. Bret Chaness, chair of the MSA Campus Safety Committee, acknowl- edged the rush. "There is going to be a panic on the part of the students because they want the better properties," he said. Gruber said his company has already leased properties that would not nor- mally be signed until spring because of the frenzy created by the ordinance. Other rental companies have observed similar effects. Campus Man- agement representatives Chris Heaton and Mark Hannaford said students were better prepared for the leasing deadline, but they said students were concerned about availability. Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 7A "From our perspective, there was a lot of pent-up demand about that sign- ing point," Hannaford said. "That says to me that people were worried." But at a University-sponsored hous- ing fair last week, many students said they didn't feel rushed to sign lease agreements. At the meeting last night, represen- tatives from student co-ops and frater- nities also said that they supported the ordinance. Greden, one of the ordinance's strongest backers on City Council, said a housing rush is only perceived because community members have not adjusted to the new law. "I don't see a systematic problem with the law itself," Greden said. Hannaford also said that this year he noticed more people were delaying waiving their renewals in order to save their rentals for friends. Melissa Goldstein, director of Off- Campus Housing for the University, said that listings on the University's off-campus website are typical of this time last year. "Right now we're over 1,000 listings on the site," she said. "There is a lot of housing out there." The ordinance mandates that City Council review the law this spring. Nick Assanis, chair of MSA's Exter- nal Relations Committee and the assembly's liaison to the City Council, said he supports the ordinance. Assa- nis said MSA is planning educational events about the ordinance. EXTRA LARGE 4 BR & 2 BR APTS. Charming Old World Flavor!!! Hardwood floors, 9 ft. Ceilings Heat, Water & Parking A Must See.!
