8F - The Michigan Daily - New Student Edition 2006 DRUNKEN I ] I SOMETIMES DRUNKENNESS HAPPENS. It's a feeling you'll come to know and love. Stumbling down South University Avenue at 3 a.m., after last call at the bar; wandering bleary-eyed from a stranger's house party; inebriated and trapped on Central Campus after missing the Bursley-Baits "drunk bus" - suddenly hunger strikes. The burrito craving digs in hard and tight under your ribs, and the once gently-gnawing pizza jones turns ferocious. Luckily, relief is only a few blocks and bucks away. JIMMY JOHN'S 1207 S. University Ave. 600 Packard St. 342 S. State St. 929 E. Ann St. For the macho dudes out there who want nothing more than to chomp into a nice hunk of meat, head to Jimmy John's. And if you're a girl who likes to count her cal- ories - especially after a few keg stands - Jimmy John's might tickle your fancy as well. Vegetables slathered in Italian dress- ing: deceptively unhealthy. Best bets: No. 4 Turkey Tom (turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, sprouts), the J.J. Gargantuan (five kinds of deli meat with provolone) TIO'S MEXICAN CAFE 333 E. Huron St. The Prickly Pear may offer pricey buffa- lo fajitas and mango pico de gallo, but does the fancy Main Street spot offer an $8.99 enchilada dinner at 4 a.m.? Nope. Kerry- town residents and drunken wanderers that make it up to Huron Street know that Tios is best in altered states. Cheesy bean dip, me gusta. Best when stoned: cheese enchilada spe- cial, bean dip with fresh chips PIZZA BOB'S 814 S. State St. Mmm, Pizza Bob's milkshakes. Even if you never choose to sample the pizza or chipatis there - we're not sure if peo- ple really ever go for the food - a Pizza Bob's milkshake must be savored during your undergrad years here in the Deuce. Fully savored - not sipped, not drank, but devoured like a hungry, hungry hippo. Plus, they call the 32-ounce option the Tub-O- Shake. Best flavor combos: almond and hot fudge; Reese's Pieces, chocolate and cara- mel; peanut butter and banana BIG TEN BURRITO 810 S. State St. With the Big Ten Conference threatening them with a sizable lawsuit, the little burri- to shop that could is being forced to change its name - but not its delicious menu. Its snappy service and patient staffers make it OK to be a bumbling drunk who just wants a quesadilla. AND WANTS IT NOW. Favorites: steak quesadilla, deluxe chick- en burrito with extra salsa and guacamole BACKROOM PIZZA 605 Church St. When you want food in your stomach pron- to - and you really don't care what it tastes like - then The Backroom's got you covered. Cheese pizza is only $1 a slice and you can pour on as much powdered parmesan and red pepper flakes as it takes for you to imagine that the greasy, irregular slab of mediocrity is the stuff they sell at Pizza House. Best, most reliable choice: cheese pizza NYPD 605 E. William,1235S. University Ave You want passion fruit on a pizza? NYPD doesn't have it, but they offer just about every- thing else. New York Pizza Depot has a host of toppings and specialty pizzas: the White Slice (boasting several kinds of cheese), the baked ziti pizza, shrimp, artichoke, eggplant. Favorites: garlic cheese bread, garlic knots or the mushroom slice. THE FLEETWOOD 300 S. Ashley St. Mmmmm. Back in the '70s, when punk- music legend Iggy Pop lived on the west side of town, him and his band The Stooges would frequent this 24-hour greasy spoon. Best at any time: Three-deck grilled cheese, the shortstack of pancakes IN-N-OUT FOOD STORE 615 E. University Ave. Who doesn't love greasy slices that spin around in a rotating display case? OK, In- N-Out might actually be a convenience store better known for keg specials and cig- arettes than for its barbeque chicken pizza, 3Mr5 but seriously, have you tried this barbeque TOP AND BOTTOM: ANGELA CESERE/Daily; MIDDLE: FILE P chicken pizza? It's really good. We think. TOP: Milkshakes, such as these from Pizza House, are a sure way to your put an end to your late night hungers. Best deals: barbeque chicken pizza, hot CENTER: Want spicy food? Be sure to stop by Ann Arbor's Mexican restaurants. dogs ABOVE: A slice of pineapple-pepporoni pizza from Pizza House. {/ e / Enroll On-Line and The University af Michigan is offering a student health insurance get Health Insurance pntostudenstsad thideps" A Proud Member of the coverage at www.
