HEART AND SOUL

Resisting temptation: The freshman's tale

I was coming back to East
Quad Residence Hall on the night
of Arbor Fest - a block party a
few weeks ago - when I bumped
into a friend of mine from French
class. We started chatting, com-
paring notes about what we were
doing that night and so on. With
my friend was a young lady who
asked me, "Wait, do you have a
British accent?"
Smiling, because the girl was
rather drunk, I told her that yes, I
do indeed have a British accent.
"Oh my God, seriously?" she
asked as she grinned even wider.
I had to resist doing an Austin
Powers impression when I told her
that I had been born in England.
"You know," the girl slurred, "I
am seriously interested in procre-
ating with somebody with a Brit-
ish accent."
I almost took her up on her
offer, but remembering my girl-
friend and the SAPAC workshop
first-year students attend, I decid-
ed against it.

Please excuse me,
prof, for being late
I was hurrying to English class
yesterday, and when Igot to Angell
Hall, I was slightly annoyed that
I had to adjust my trajectory to
avoid the workers on the steps.
As I walked past them, the
strains of Alabama's song "I'm In
A Hurry" drifted up.
The workers had parked a huge
truck on the walkway next to the
steps, rolled down the windows
and were blasting 102.9 FM.
I stopped to listen to one of
the workers scrape the steps in
rhythm to the music, which made
me late to class.
It was worth it.

Heard over coffee
I was sitting in a coffee shop last
weekend, sipping my cafe mocha
and pretending to read a maga-
zine while eavesdropping on four
Ugg-clad girls. One of the girls
was complaining about a class.
One friendsaid,"Youshould just
tell your GSIto let youwatch Dirty
Dancing II: Havana Nights."
"I already tried that, and he
said the movie had no educational
value."
"What?" a third friend said.
"Hello - Cuban guys really are
that hot."

An intervention
Here's how I realized my polit-
ical science participation grade
may not be so strong. Yesterday in
section I spoke for one of the first
times, and the student who had
sat two seats down all term said
audibly to the class: "Are you new
to this section?"
