University Housing Director John Feldkamp said he did not oversell residence hall rooms, but he admits to having miscalculated the number of vacancies. "It's a great puzzle to me," said Feldkamp. Layonda Baldwinis among those who are choosing charter schools over the Detroit Public Schools. Baldwin is sending her 5-year- old son to the Detroit Edison Pub- lic School Academy, where he will start kindergarten tomorrow. Baldwin, who was educated in the Detroit schools, said she thinks a lot has changed since she was a student more than 10 years ago and thinks the district does not do enough for the teachers. "They can't work for free," she said. "If their livelihood is not taken care of, how are they going to take care of other people's chil- dren's livelihoods. We spend so much money on stuff that makes no sense." Baldwin has no plans of ever sending her son to a Detroit public school. "As long as DPS is doing what they are doing and it's a lousy job of it, yes, he will be in a charter school," Baldwin said. "I'd rather pay for my son's edu- cation out of my pocket than put him is DPS." NSE advertiser index ck to School Special!
