The Beans Day Care Center
By Sarah Sala
Their piercing screams
knock like rocks off houses,
a collective of beginning voices
screech enough to drop
squirrels from the trees.
Forever in motion, the tiny
figures are frantic energies
of chase and retreat, digging
and scaling - here wriggling
fingers try to pull a tuft
of cat through the fence
and into their world,
still another feeding itself
a sandy-dirt swallow of grass.
When I leave my house
in the morning they arrest
themselves like brand new
sheep, stock still and staring.
I sometimes want to come over
to them, unsure how they would react,
but one hisses and another licks
at the gate: its superhero shoe, untied.

Lady Rebecca's corset

He discovered no isle or key as lonely as himself.

Lies unfastened still, the ribbon not engaged
to rib. Bone compresses brown-tipped swell -
inverted nipples, & heavy satin will assuage
the burn of silence, tongue uncompelled
to voice nostalgia studding finery's clasp:
mouth filled - raw earth, the languorous under
brush, his tongue. Across her honeyed mass.
Rendering borders fluid: from caged, to hunter
caged again. She stands. Her memories stayed
alongside spine bones stiffening & a near-
perfected high-heeled stamp. The Court awaits.
To gild her bones then courteously lick her bare.
A curiosity. The royal lips will foam & split
embalming sea too vast for high-heeled foot.
