6C - The Michigan Daily - New Student Edition 2006 I SG ER ICAL PSCHOLOF >> Getting around campus during the first week of classes can be a hassle. Let's be honest: Navigating alien territory is tough. But throw in unreliable busses, out-of-conrol rollerbladers and inch-thick black ice, and it gets even tougher. Now factor in professors who will make a chorus out of your late arrival. The Daily recog- nizes you plight and has come up with a guide that'll help you plan your route accordingly before you get the hang of things. The clocks reflect walking time estimates as recorded by two relatively in-shape Daily staffers, and the extra text includes a few words from the wise on what to watch out for on the walk to class. Don't be a lazy bastard. A one-minute bus ride to Pierpont sounds favorable to a seven-minute walk, but it's not worth the ride. You might have to brave winter temperatures and climb the steep hill along Bonisteel, but at least you'll burn a few calories in the process. Besides, a walk gives you the opportunity to view the natural beauty of North Campus. minutes NORTJA OD 11 NOPT 0 ILY HOUSING RTHWOOD III O OD I UNITY CENTER NRECREION: Nim BUILDIN BAIOUS NGELECTRICAL ENGINEERING & COMPUTER SCIENCE SPACE RESN ENG. But for some reasonthe South University Avenue/State Street intersection with the blinking red light seems to give drivers a warped mentality that they don't have to yield for peds if they don't want. It seems like there is a "close call" there every 10 minutes. Watch yourself. >> Hill to Central >> Best mode of transportation: walking >> Watch out for: black ice on the bridge It's not a bad walk, and you'll learn the exact number of seconds that it takes to get from your bed to a desk in the back of your 8:30 a.m. class. The only obstacle that can impede the well-timed trip is the bridge. It gets extremely icy in the win- ter, and if you're wise and tread lightly, you will probably need to add at least five minutes to your walk. Or you can be the moron who wipes out. >> Baits to C.C. Uttle >> Best mode of transportation: bus >> Watch out for: the unpredictable weekend bus, the weekly morning-rush-to- class bus (standing-room only) If you're stuck on North Campus, don't panic - the weekday bus system is fairly reliable. The trip to Cen- tral lasts about 15 minutes, 20 during rush hour. It's the weekend bus you'll want to look out for. While you may spend anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes wait- ing for the weekday bus to arrive, it can take up to 40 minutes just to catch the weekend route. >> Oxford to Rackham >> Best mode of transportation: Oxford bus, bike >> Watch out for: speedy rollerbladers This walk is a bit longer than the average campus jaunt. Not a problem, except for the fact that the folks that live in the off-campus boonies often opt for rollerblades to make up for the extradistance. This gets dangerous for all because this forgotten pathway is unusually bumpy, and sometimes you just can't get out of the way. minutes >> South Quadrangle to the MLB >> Best mode of transportation: walking >> Watch out for: the MLB wind tunnel You check Weatherbug.com and it says 48 degrees outside. You look out, see the sun shining, and think to yourself, "Hey, it's fall, it's a nice day out. I'll go for the jacket today and leave the scarf behind altogether." Well that's ine until you get to the MLB windtunnel where the temperature somehow drops towsub-arctic levels. Do yourself a favor and throw the scarf in your >> Diag to Michigan Stadium >> Best mode of transportation: walking >> Watch out for: meandering alumni This walk is going to seem like it takes much longer because of the anticipation, but factoring in 23 minutes into your schedule is more than sufficient. But if you're traveling to the Big House within two homsof game time, you're going to need to adaohr sxrseven minutes because alumni arc slow. It's a fact. They drive slow and they walk slow because they love the Univer- sity, butfuckifthey'llevergetoutof your way. >> West Quadrangle to CCRB >> Best mode of transportation: walking >> Watch out for: people flyering in the Diag When you are going to work out, probably the only thing that you'rethinking aboutishow much youdon't want to do it. The last thing you want is a confronta- tion with someone from a student organization and a little piece of paper to throw away before you get on the devil of a treadmill. Going through the Diag means that you're fair game and that you're going to avoid making eye contact at all costs. Be ready. >> Fletcher to the UGLi >> Best mode of transportation: walking >> Watch out for: people having fun So if you are walking to the UGLi that means you're probably going to plant yourself there for sev- eral hours and have no fun. But at night, this particu- lar walk is going to take you past a lot of party houses and inevitably a lot of people who are having much more fun than you. It takes will power to make it all the way to the library withoutstopping for a brew. minutes minutes minutes : 4 1
