COKE SUIT Continued from page 1 University lawyers said their case is built on legal quicksand. "There's no legal foundation for those arguments. Our attorneys were quite confident it would not pre- vail," University spokeswoman Julie Peterson said on behalf of the college's legal counsel team. Weber claimed UMAJIC's threat was the final catalyst in convincing the University to reinstate the 13 contracts with Coke, pointing out that the admin- istration announced the temporary restoration of purchasing on the same day as the group's deadline, April 10. NEWS The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, April 18, 2006 - 7 University officials deny his claim. "This letter by the students didn't have any direct impact on our decision to reinstate. The decision was made over several weeks - it was a coincidence of timing," Peterson said. She explained that contrary to claims by both UMA- JIC and the Coke coalition, the University's decision to bring back the fizzy drink was made through careful discussions with the Atlanta-based company that have been ongoing since late December. Weber said he hopes to convince the University to unconditionally comply with his request in a meeting with Dan Sharphorn, the University's deputy general counsel, later this week. If it does not, he and Cun- ningham will file the lawsuit at the Ann Arbor Dis- trict Court on Monday, Weber said. Although neither student has any legal experience, they intend to represent themselves. Members of the Coke coalition, who claim the University prematurely reinstated the contract behind their backs, are also extremely skeptical of Weber and Cunningham's ability to win the lawsuit if they file. "Our coalition hasn't taken them very seriously," said Clara Hardie, RC senior and member of the activ- ist group. "Personally, I think the whole thing is pretty ridiculous. They have no legitimacy whatsoever." None of the other universities around the country that have suspended contracts with Coke have rein- stated purchasing. About a dozen schools, includ- ing New York University, have stopped selling Coke products after finding the company guilty of human and labor rights violations. For Tuesday, April 18, 2006 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You have to admit it's your nature to leap into a debate. I advise you to resist this impulse. Lots of people are quarrel- some today. Zip thy lip. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is one of those days when you can barely agree with yourself! One voice tells you to do one thing, then another voice tells you to do another. Relax; you're not really hearing voices. It's two aspects of your mind. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don't get on your high horse when dealing with friends and groups today. I say this because it's very easy to overre- act to what others say right now. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid disagreements with bosses, par- ents, VIPs and authority figures. You won't win. Nevertheless, you want to get your two cents' worth in. (Think before you speak!) LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Political, religious and philosophical areas are all fodder for potential argu- ments today. Steer clear of these touchy subjects! You're only preaching to the choir or deaf ears. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) push anyone's buttons. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Be careful when talking to co-workers today. Something could get blown out of proportion and turn into an argument. Remember that you have to work with these people in the future. (Oh, yeah.) SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Parents must be especially patient with children today. Your nerves are frayed. The quickest way to settle a messy situation is often with a hug. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Family conflicts might erupt today. There's also a chance for broken appli- ances and small accidents in the home. Be extra careful. Take your time. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) It's not worth getting into an argument with siblings, relatives or neighbors. What's the point of that? You have to get along with these people. Demonstrate grace under pressure. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Don't quarrel with others about money and possessions today. It won't resolve anything. Wait until another day to dis- cuss these matters. YOU BORN TODAY You're very determined, creative and earnest about expressing yourself through your many talents.
